So the Goodwins were brothers.

The Auckland Museum site is "playing up" this morning but when I searched for John Goodwin last night it did confirm that he was a "Kirkie" man.
http://www.aucklandmuseum.com/war-memorial/online-cenotaph/search

The 1901 census has Charles Goodwin 41, Mary Goodwin 38, John Goodwin
17
, Charles 15, Robert 15, Mary 7 and James Goodwin 5.
