The second world war names were unveiled on November 11th 1948, it being the 30th anniversary of the end of the first world war.

http://www.arbroathtimeline.moonfruit.com/#/19401949/4518414407

As it is there are 491 great war names on the memorial & 214 Second world war names. Also now there is one Northern Ireland Death listed.

Arbroath expanded between the wars to include St Vigeans and Arbirlot parishes, their second world war dead are commemorated here.

One of the men listed on the Second World War plaques is also listed on the Auchmithie Church War Memorial

SWANKIE, JOSEPH THOMSON
Rank: Able Seaman
Regiment/Service: Royal Navy
Unit Text: H.M.S. Goodall
Date of Death: 29/04/1945
Service No: C/JX 353265
Additional information: Son of James and Agnes Swankie, of Auchmithie, Angus.

Although listed on the War Memorial, Arbroath born (I checked) Carlo Roberto Carini is not in the CWGC database. It seems a pity as he did his bit.

There is a photograph of his gravestone at A.N.P.I.

Memorial transcription: "Victims of fratricidal hatred on 1 November 1944 at this spot Partisans Carlo Carini, aged 21, and Aldo Bruschi, aged 21, gave their young lives for their country. In everlasting and glorious memory by their parents."

The site also says this of his fate:
"On 31.10.44 the inseperable companions [Aldo] Bruschi and Carlo Carini were on an assignment on the San Giorgio-Piacenza road when they were attacked by a superior force. They did not flinch but defended themselves until finally they were overcome. They were taken to Piacenza prison and identified as Partisans and at dawn on 1 November 1944 they were executed by firing squad on the road to Sant Antonio. Carlo Carini faced death with the same serene composure and fortitude which he had shown since his arrival in Italy in the distant 1938."

Good to see that Mr Carini has been commemorated by Arbroath. Since he was born in Scotland would he qualify for inclusion on a Roll in the SNWM?

Thanks

Adam

Mary Nicol, was born in Arbroath and worked at Arbroath Infirmary before going to Singapore as a nursing sister in the General Hospital at Straits Settlement.
She was killed when the ship she was being evacuated from Singapore upon was sunk by the Japanese.

Sadly she is not on the towns memorial, but is commemorated in the CWGC database.

Having spoken to a friend in the town who told me this Black Watch soldier was a relative of his .. Seems that this young lad was 6ft tall at the age of 16 and was accepted for war service in the Black Watch in 1914 .

Pte Charles HENDRY is listed on the Arbroath War Memorial:

CWGC index shows :

HENDRY CHARLES MCLEOD , Pte 240400, death date 16/2/1918 , aged 18 , Black Watch 5th Bn, Arbroath Eastern Cemetery grave ref O 229 , son of Charles McLeod Hendry, and Isabella Hendry , of 16 North Grimsby Arbroath , born Arbroath.

One of the two arbroath & District publications for WW1 show this obituary : This one has a photograph of the young soldier :

Pte Charles Hendry , 5th Black Watch, son of Charles Hendry of 16th North GrimsbyArbroath was employed at the Public Shambles when he enlisted in August 1914. Although only 15 years of age , he was accepted on account of his physique . During the Battle of the Somme he was buried by a shell explosion and sustained so severe a shock that he was eventually discharged in July 1917. He never recovered from his injuries , and died in the Arbroath Infirmary on the 16th February 1918 . He was buried in the Eastern Cemetery Arbroath with FULL MILITARY HONOURS . ( Scottish War Graves project website shows the CWGC headstone at the Arbroath's Eastern Cemetery )

The Scottish National War Memorial at the Edinburgh Castle has no entry for this young soldier of the Black Watch and there is no entry on the Soldiers died in the Great War index either .

I am today contacting Lt Col Roger Binks , Secretary of the SNWM to apply for this soldier's name to the Black Watch roll of honour . (dont see a problem )

Pte Hendry is buried in Arbroath Eastern Cemetery Grave ref O 229 and a CWGC headstone is located at his war grave . He is also listed on the East Free Church War memorial now located in St Andrews C of S church in the town
