I live in the town but couldn't attend, a friend of mine did however and here's what he said. "Was at today's ceremony. Deeply moving, especially talking to Norman Fee, who was shot in the back by possibly the same sniper the previous day and is now paralysed from chest down. Nice bloke.
Col Clavering told me an interesting tale about how they reckon they know who fired the shot that killed Gdsm Lockhart but naming names might lead to litigation. |

The Arbroath Burgh war memorial was unveiled on 3 June 1922 : A booklet called "Wir Bookie - O ' The toon o' Arbroath " published Oct 1981 Arbroath Herald has a photo of the Officials proceeding to the unveiling on foot !
The caption reads " June 3rd 1922 - a day of days which stands out as memorable , is that upon which the Burgh War memorial was unveiled , and occasion taken to honour the most distinguised son of Arbroath who was present to perform the unveiling ceremony, the Right Hon Lord Inchcape , GCMG . The photograph in this booklet shows the distinguished party arriving for the ceremony which included Lady Inchcape and their daughter the Hon Mrs Wyndham , Provost Anderson, The Earl of Strathmore, , Lord Lieutenant of the County , Mrs Anderson , the Rev J A Tweedie , the Rev R Smith Mackintosh, Rev J Spence Cuthill and the Rev James Cameron . A short address was delivered by Lord Inchcape
after which he Memorial was unveiled adn dedicated . Following the unvieling Lord Inchcape was made a Freeman of the Burgh .

Listed on this Memorial is
Lieutenant Patrick Wright ANDERSON, 8th Bn The Black Watch, 10th Bn The Black Watch and 18 Sqn RFC & RAF who was seriously wounded in action in DH 4 daytime bomber over Flanders on 27 June 1918 whilst being an Observer. He died of his serious stomach wounds & thigh wounds received in action at Arbroath Infirmary on 2 November 1921 after being hospitalised from 1918 until being discharged back home to Arbroath in 1919. He arrived home at Arbroath railway station by ambulance train on 11 November 1919 having spent these months in hospitals in England but they could do no more for him ... He was the eldest son of Patrick Wright Anderson ,accounant of 43 Hill Street, Arbroath . He was at the outbreak of the Great War a university student at University College Dundee then part of St Andrews University and a corporal in the St Andrews University O TC . On of his cousins,

One of the men listed on the Second World War plaques is also listed on the Auchmithie Church War Memorial
SWANKIE, JOSEPH THOMSON

Additional information: Son of James and Agnes Swankie, of Auchmithie, Angus.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: 81, 1.
Memorial: CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL
Note his date of death just days before VE Day. The Captain Class Frigate HMS 'Goodall' was the last Royal Navy warship to be lost in the European theatre of operations during the Second World War when it was torpedoed by U-286 off Murmansk. A.B. Swankie was one of 112 men lost in the sinking. U-286 was then sunk on the same day by three RN ships with the loss of 51 men.
