Inscription and Additional Details

The Memorial is set in Cowan Park , Barrhead facing Darnley Road.

Grid Ref NS 509598

The memorial is made of grey stone. There is a sloping square section plinth and block which sit on three broad low steps. The edges are rough dressed but all 4 faces of the block are polished and inscribed with the names of the fallen from WW1. The main face has a coat of arms above the Inscription ‘IN MEMORIAM’. The names of the fallen are in two columns on each face. Above the names of the fallen at the top edge of each face is a name of country or continent of battle from WW1. These are: FRANCE; FLANDERS; THE SEAS; RUSSIA; ASIA; AFRICA; TURKEY; ITALY. The cross above the block is carved on three sides with Celtic knot work. The cross has a wheel and there is a smaller cross carved into the lowest of the panels on the front face of the shaft. Overall height of the memorial is 6 to 8m

Behind the WW1 memorial is a low wall with the names of the fallen from WW2 on two panels on either side of the wall and the main inscription is on the centre of the wall.

The memorial was slightly altered last year to record the names of three men from barrhead who lost their lives while serving since the second world war.

The following text is taken from the Paisley Daily Express of 5th November 2008

THE names of three soldiers who died on active service around 30 years ago have been added to a town’s war memorial.

The families of Privates John Hunter and William Forsyth, both of the Scots Guards, and Private Douglas McKelvie, of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, saw their loved ones honoured at a moving ceremony at the memorial to the fallen of two World Wars and later conflicts at Cowan Park, Barrhead.

Private Hunter, who was 17, and Private Forsyth, who was 18, died in the notorious Guildford pub bombings of August 1974, while Private McKelvie, who was 20, died in a road accident while on duty in South Armagh in August 1979.

All three were from Barrhead.

A piper played a lament as the ceremony unfolded. It was conducted by the Rev Maureen Leitch, of Bourock Church, who offered words of comfort to the proud but still brokenhearted families of the three dead men.

Also present were members of the men’s regiments, along with old servicemen and women who are members of the British Legion.

In all, around 90 people attended the event which heard an address from Councillor Alex Mackie, Provost of East Renfrewshire, who paid tribute to the courage and sacrifice of Privates Hunter, Forsyth and McKelvie.
The war memorial at Cowan Park has a long list of the names of those killed in war and other conflicts.

And, after consultation with families, it was decided to add the names of those who died in more recent conflicts.

A spokesman for East Renfrewshire Council said: “The ceremony went very well and was very well attended by families and representatives of the regiments, along with the British Legion.

“It was obviously a very moving experience for the families even after all this time.”

The rededication of the war memorial took place on Saturday, November 1, the first day of the season of remembrance, which culminates on Armistice Day, on November 11.

Hundreds will remember the fallen on Remembrance Sunday on November 9.

The changes relate to the screen wall originally constructed to commemorate the dead of WW2.

The dates 1939-45 have been added above the names on the end sections.

This has allowed a change of function of the middle section, the wording of which has been changed to relate to those "fallen in other conflicts since 1945", with the names to the three men added.

Although the wording change has been skillfully done, as you'll see in my picture, some aspects of the former wording (the dates 1939 -1945) can still be seen faintly.

The name James M Wade has also been added to the 1939-45 panels. I wonder if this was done at the same time as these other names were added?

I hope this is the right place to post this. Adam James Kennedy is listed on the memorial in Barrhead.

My grandmother had a copy of "In Flanders Fields", and it's the first poem I ever read. Her uncle, Adam Kennedy, died in the First Battle of Ypres in 1914.

He was a member of the First Gordon Highlanders.

She kept the poem along with this picture of Adam.

I am still carrying out research but I believe that I have found 3 Gt. Uncles who did not survive the First World War.
They were all born in Barrhead but do not appear on the Barrhead memorial.
Who would I contact to have this omission possibly remedied.

Every memorial committee had different criteria for the inclusion of names on a memorial. Just because someone was born in Barrhead it doesn't mean they should automatically be listed on this memorial.

Do you know where your Great Uncles were living in 1914? If they were in Barrhead then there has been an omission here but if they moved away from Barrhead soon after they were born then there may have been no connection to the town during the war years and they may be listed elsewhere.

I take it you've identified them in the CWGC database. can you post the details here so we can help.

Hi Adam, sorry for not replying sooner.
I take your point about those lads not being on the Barrhead Memorial because the families may have moved away. I will try and find out their addresses circa 1914-1918 but the 1911 census is not due out for another year so it may take me some time. One clue I do have is that the 2 Redmonds had a younger brother born at Burncrooks? Strathblane in 1914 so that might suggest that the family were living there then. I still have to chase up the Brooks family though.
I did receive an e-mail from a source that informed me that the names do NOT appear on ANY war memorial in the UK. Since then I have visited Edinburgh Castle and found Alexander Redmond (machine gun corps) registered in one of the books of remembrance.
I'll let you know more when I access it.

Hi John

Would be interested to see the full names and dates of death to see what we can find out about them.

I cannot imagine how someone could think that the names are not on any memorial in the UK. There is no resource which could conceivably know that. In scotland we are slowly building such a resource here but in the rest of UK there is much less that has been done. Even here we have newly recorded memorials posted virtually every day, so even if a man is not on any currently listed Scottish memorial today, it is still worth checking back from time to time.
