ROBT. TEMPLETON, SCOTTISH RIFLES.

Robert Templeton, Private (1356 & 202183) 5th/6th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) Age 26.
Robert was educated at Kirkinner School and Kilmarnock Academy and managed his father's farms. He enlisted in July 1916 and went the Front in the November. He was killed at Polygon Wood
Born 1891 in Riccarton, Ayrshire. Son of William and Margaret (Steel) Templeton of Dalneagle Farm, Kirkinner and Broadfield Farm, Wigtown.
Missing in action on 26 September 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.


JAMES THOMSON, KINGS OWN SCOTTISH BOR.

James Thomson, Private (9300 & 201661) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Also Private (16195) 1st KOSB.
Age 20.
James joined his battalion at Gallipoli in August 1915. After a severe illness he was posted to the 1st KOSB in France where he was badly wounded at the Somme in July 1916. On being sent back to Egypt he was on board the troopship “Cameronian” when she was torpedoed and sunk in the Mediterranean on 15 April 1917. He was picked up by a destroyer and landed at Malta, before proceeding to Palestine a few days later. Just after rejoining his old battalion he was fatally wounded.
Born 1897 in Kirkinner. Son of Allan and Fanny (Wright) Thomson of Tahall Cottage, Kirkinner.
Died of wounds on 24 May 1917 and buried in Deir el Belah War Cemetery, Palestine.


JAMES F. WILSON, CAMERON HIGHLANDERS.

James Fleming Wilson, Private (203954) 6th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders. Formerly Trooper (6334) Lovat's Scouts. Age 26.
James had been in service with the Earl of Stair at Lochinch Castle.
Born 1891 in Glenluce, Wigtownshire.
Son of the late Joseph Wilson and of Elizabeth (Jess) Wilson. Elizabeth was at Over Airlies Farm, Whauphill, Kirkinner in 1918.
Missing in action on 28 March 1918 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Glenluce War Memorials and on the Inch Parish War Memorial.

And his brother

Robert Frederick Wilson, Lance Sergeant (S/10940) 1/6th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. Formerly Trooper (6097) 2/2nd Lovat's Scouts and Corporal (S/27142) 7th Cameron Highlanders. Age 28.
Robert was an hotel porter when he enlisted in the 2/2nd Lovat's Scouts in October 1915. He was based at Benacre Camp near Lowestoft in Suffolk when he married in April 1916 and around that time his battalion was converted to a cyclist unit in 1st Cyclist Brigade. In December 1916 he joined the 7th Cameron Highlanders in France and in March 1917 was posted to the 1/6th Gordon Highlanders.
Born 1890 in Glenluce, Wigtownshire. Son of the late Joseph Wilson and of Elizabeth (Jess) Wilson. Elizabeth was at Over Airlies Farm, Whauphill, Kirkinner in 1918. Husband of Grace Breckinridge (Douglas) Wilson of Alvie Lodge, Kincraig, Inverness-shire who he married in 1916 in Alvie. His brother James was a witness.
Killed in action on 9 May 1918 and buried in Roclincourt Military Cemetery, Arras, France.
Also named on the Glenluce War Memorials.

A slightly grainy photo of Pte J Shillan (incorrectly attributed to Lancashire Yeomanry) was reproduced in last week's Galloway Gazette though with no supporting narrative.

Anne - "Fred" is named with his brother James on the family gravestone in Inch Parish Churchyard in Castle Kennedy.

Private (203954) James Fleming Wilson, 6th Cameron Higlanders died just before his brother on 28 March 1918. James is named on the Inch Parish War Memorial and the brothers are named together on the Glenluce Memorials as well as on the Kirkinner Parish Memorial.
Their parents Joseph and Elizabeth (Jess) Wilson farmed at Over Airies, Whauphill, Kirkinner.


Anne - I've just found Fred's service record as Trooper, 6097 in Lovat's Scouts.
