This is my Great Grandad, Company Sergeant Major Robert Duncan Stewart of the 2bn Black Watch. He died on the 9th May 1915 at the Battle of Aubers Ridge having served in India and fought in the Boar War. It should say CQMS. |

That's him Kenneth.
I did some limited research and found an entry in the local paper with a photo of him. Not sure if could upload it onto here.
His name was actually Robert Stewart Duncan but, from stories my Mum told me as a boy, two people joined the same day with this same name so he was changed to Robert Duncan Stewart taking one of his middle names.
He served in Sialkot, Bengal, India and fought in the Boar War though I have no further details of that.
The entry in the paper states, "Son of Mr James Stewart, Noresk Road, Montrose is officially notified as killed. He was through the Boer War, and had been stationed in India for eight years before going to the front with the 2nd Black Watch. His wife and four children reside in Carluke. Only recently the deceased soldier was promoted to the rank which he held when killed."
I am contacting the local Army Cadet Detachment to ask if they will lay a wooden cross for him this year that I will send up. |

Hi Iain and I should have said before, welcome to the project.
I've done a quick bit of research and it looks as though he was known in the military as Robert Stewart Duncan but I suspect that he was known locally as a Stewart.
I'll send you the details of my research directly but his marriage register entry explains a bit.
on 8 September 1905 at 3 Low Street, Perth, Robert Stewart (called Duncan) Lance Sergeant, Black Watch at Queen's Barracks Perth married Beatrice Pettigrew Hinshelwood of 3 Low Street, Perth.
His parents are shown as James Stewart (joiner) and Jessie Stewart m.s. Duncan.
In 1911 Robert Stewart Duncan, Sergeant, Married, was with the 2nd Black Watch in India and as Sergeant (6976) he landed with his battalion at Marseilles on 12 October 1914.
In August 1914 the battalion had been in Bareilly, India. Part of the Bareilly Brigade in Meerut Division and on 21 September 1914 they began the move to France. _________________ Ken |

Ken, Thank you for the information. I really appreciate this.
If the details are right there is a bit of a 'story' here. Looks like James Stewart and this Sister in Law were living together before he married Jessie who died before Robert was born. Have I got that right?
And that Jessie was his mother. I wonder if that ever got married.
Kind Regards Iain |

Iain - to answer these questions I need to post the stuff I sent to you.
I hope that is OK.
Robert Stewart Duncan was born on 25 September 1880 at Lochside, Montrose to Jessie Duncan (Domestic Servant)
1871 Whitefield Cottages, Dun, Angus.
James Stewart (Joiner) 35, Margaret Stewart 8, James Stewart 3, Jessie Duncan 26 (Sister in Law & Housekeeper)
James Mitchell Stewart had married Jane Duncan in 1862 at Logie Pert (Angus) Jane died at Dun in 1870.
So it appears that Jessie came to look after the family after her sister died and it is possible that James and Jessie then had a child (Robert) but James is not named on the birth register.
1881 at Northesk Road Montrose:
Margaret Stewart 18, James Stewart 13, William Stewart 8, Mary Stewart 2
Robert S Duncan 6 Mo and Jessie Duncan 38 (aunt & housekeeper)
I don't know where James was (working away?) nor do I know who were the parents of William and Mary - they are shown as brother and sister of Margaret.
You would have to look up their birth records.
1891 at Northesk Road
Jas Mitchell Stewart 57, Jessie Stewart 50, Wm Stewart 18, Margt (Mary?) Stewart 12, Robt Stewart (Duncan) 10, Allen Stewart 3.
1901 at Northesk Road
James M. Stewart 65, Jessie Duncan 59, Mary Stewart 22, Allan G Stewart 13.
The birth record of Allan should show if James and Jessie were his parents and if so, if they had married and where/when.
on 8 September 1905 at 3 Low Street, Perth, Robert Stewart (called Duncan) Lance Sergeant, Black Watch at Queen's Barracks Perth married Beatrice Pettigrew Hinshelwood of 3 Low Street, Perth.
His parents are shown as James Stewart (joiner) and Jessie Stewart m.s. Duncan. - neither are shown to be deceased. _________________ Ken |
