James was the manager of the Dalbeattie Co-operative Society when he enlisted in the Gordon Highlanders in 1916.
However he is named on the Dalbeattie War Memorial in Kirkcudbrightshire as:
PTE. JAMES ALLAN, A.& S.H. Confused
