    WAR MEMORIALS

    MINNIGAFF.— The Minnigaff war memorial was unveiled by the Countess of Galloway in presence of a large gathering. A service was conducted by the Rev. L. E. McVicker, minister of the parish, and the Rev. W. H. Bram Douglas, Trinity U. F. Church. Major A. C. Armitage, of Kerronglitrie, chairman of the Memorial Committee, presided. The memorial, which takes the form of an obelisk, is the work of Mr R. W. Mackenzie, sculptor, Newton-Stewart, and was designed by Dr Ross, architect, Edinburgh.

The Countess of Galloway and Major A.C. Armitage both lost a son in the war.

Lieutenant The Honourable Keith Anthony Stewart, 2nd Black Watch was killed on 9 May 1915 and is buried in the Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France. He was the son of the 11th Earl of Galloway.

Lieutenant Colonel Francis Arthur William Armitage, Distinguished Service Order, 1st Bn Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment) was in command of the 1st Bn. Hampshire Regiment when he was killed on 22 April 1918. He is buried in Gonnehem British Cemetery, France.
His father, Arthur Calrow Armitage, had been a Major in the West Yorkshires before the war.

Andrew Allison, Sergeant (S/9863) 9th Bn. Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) Age 26.
Andrew was a ploughman on his uncles' farm when he enlisted in May 1915. He served in France where he was wounded and evacuated to the Lord Derby War Hospital near Warrington where he died.
Born 1890 in Kirkmabreck, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Janet Allison. Nephew of Robert and Andrew Allison of Little Park Farm, Minnigaff.
Died of wounds on 10 October 1916 and buried in Minnigaff Parish Churchyard (CWG)
Also named on the Stronord School Memorial in the Outdoor Centre, Minnigaff.


Lt. Col. F.A.W. ARMITAGE, D.S.O.
Francis Arthur William Armitage, Distinguished Service Order, Lieutenant Colonel: 1st Bn. Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment), Commanding 1st Bn. Hampshire Regiment. Age 34.
Francis was educated at Cheltenham and at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the WYR in 1902 and served in India until 1912; as a Lt. in 1907 and Captain in 1911. He served in France from December 1914 and was wounded at Arras and Ypres. In August 1916 he was selected to command the 1st Hampshires and was killed while leading the battalion at Pacout Wood near Gonnehem. He was awarded the DSO for his command of the battalion in April 1917.
Capt. (actg. Lt.-Col.) Francis Arthur William Armitage, W. York. R., attd. Hamps. R.
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He commanded his battalion with the utmost skill and determination. Subjected to heavy shell fire throughout, he remained in close touch with the enemy, gaining his objective the first day. He successfully beat off an enemy counter-attack, and held on until relieved.
Born 1883 at Balmae House, Kirkcudbright. Son of Arthur Calrow Armitage and of Alice Barbara (Morris) Armitage of Kirroughtree, Minnigaff. Husband of Eileen Constance Rouvi're (Day) Armitage of Whittington, Litchfield, Staffordshire who he married in 1915 in Litchfield.
Killed in Action on 22 April 1918 and buried in Gonnehem British Cemetery, France.
Also remembered on an individual memorial and on the church memorial in Challoch (All Saints) Episcopal Church.

Arthur Baird, Private (148065) 29th Bn. Machine Gun Corps. Formerly Private (2296 & 240708) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Bn. King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 21.
Arthur enlisted in October 1914 as Private (2296) in the 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. He served overseas with the battalion as Private (240708) before transferring to the MGC.
Born 1897 in Whithorn, Wigtownshire. (as George Arthur Baird) Son of William and Margaret (McKechnie) Baird of Newton Stewart.
Killed in action 18 August 1918 and buried in Meteren Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Penninghame Parish War Memorial in Newton Stewart and on the Creebridge Free Church Memorial now in Penninghame Parish Church.


L.Cpl. ALEX. CUTHBERTSON.
Alexander Swainson Cuthbertson, Lance Corporal (10660) 2nd Bn. Scots Guards. Age 29.
"Alick" worked as a draper, initially as an apprentice in Newton Stewart and then in Kirkcudbright and Glasgow before coming to Stranraer in 1908. He enlisted in September 1914 and joined his battalion in France in March 1915. He served at Bethune, where he was wounded, and at Festubert where he was killed.
Born 1886 in Newton Stewart, Penninghame, Wigtownshire. Son of George and Agnes (Robertson) Cuthbertson of Minnigaff.
Missing in action on 16 May 1915 and named on Le Touret Memorial, France. Also named on the Stranraer Burgh War Memorial and on the Stronord School Memorial in the Outdoor Centre, Minnigaff.

John Logan Diamond, Sergeant (907 & 240044) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Bn. King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 33.
John landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He then served in Egypt and Palestine.
Born 1884 in Newton Stewart, Penninghame, Wigtownshire. Son of William and Marion (Pollock) Diamond of Minnigaff. Husband of Jessie (Laurie) Diamond of Newton Stewart who he married in 1907 in Pennighame.
Killed in action 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine. Also listed on the Penninghame Parish War Memorial in Newton Stewart and on the Penninghame Parish Church Memorial.


BOMBr. GEORGE GIBSON.
George Alexander Gibson, Private (20476) 5th Bn. Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) Formerly Gunner (12413) Royal Horse Artillery and Private (SS/3184) No. 1 Labour Company, Army Service Corps. Age 33.
George enlisted in September 1900 and served with “Z” Battery of the RHA. In May 1902 he volunteered for service in the South African War and served there until January 1904. He rejoined his Regiment in India and served there until 1908. He was finally discharged from the Army, time expired, in September 1912 after 4 years in the Reserves. In August 1914 he enlisted in the ASC in Glasgow and served in France but, due to injury, was discharged as unfit for active service in December 1914. However in 1915 he re-enlisted and was posted to Home-based Company of the 5th Cameronians and served at a wireless station in Sussex. He died of pneumonia in the Surrey Home Military Hospital in Seaford near Newhaven in Sussex.
Born 1882 in Whithorn, Wigtownshire. Son of Alexander and Christina (Conning) Gibson of West Lodge, Kirroughtree, Minnigaff. Husband of Mary (Templeton) Gibson of New City Road, Glasgow who he married in 1911 at Gorbals, Glasgow.
Died on active service on 5 March 1916 and buried in Seaford Cemetery, Sussex. (CWG)

Robert Young Gilbert, Private (1675) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Bn. King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 17.
"Bertie" enlisted in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915.
Born 1897 in Glasgow, Son of David and Mary Douglas (Herron) Gilbert of Kirroughtree Lodge, Minnigaff.
Missing in action on 12 July 1915 and namted on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Creebridge Free Church Memorial now in Penninghame Parish Church.


Pte. ALEX. HANNAY.
Alexander Hannay, Private (G/47924) 2nd Bn. Royal Fusiliers. Age 23.
Alexander enlisted in June 1915 in the 23rd Royal Fusiliers – 1st Sportsman's Battalion. He was wounded three times.
Born 1894 at Bent Farm, Minnigaff. Son of Alexander and Janet (Millar) Hannay.
Missing in action on 24 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also listed on the nearby Bargrennan War Memorial.

Adam enlisted as Private (4137) in the Scots Guards in November 1901. After his term of service expired he became a policeman with Wigtownshire Constabulary and was based in Cairnryan when he re-enlisted in September 1914.
Born 1882 at Kirroughtree, Minnigaff. Son of Thomas Parr Ion and of Jessie (McGowan) Ion of Stronord, Palnure, Minnigaff. Husband of Agnes (McKie - m.s. Herron) Ion who he married in 1911 in Stranraer.
Killed in action on 9 October 1917 and buried in Artillery Wood Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Lochryan Parish War Memorial and the Lochryan Parish Church Memorial, both in Cairnryan cemetery, and on the Stronord School Memorial in the Outdoor Centre, Minnigaff.

John was a rancher when he enlisted in May 1916 in Nakusp, Arrow Lakes, British Columbia. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in January 1917 and was posted to the 2nd CMR in France in May.
Born 1885 at Kirroughtree, Minnigaff. Son of Thomas Parr Ion and of Jessie (McGowan) Ion of Stronord, Palnure, Minnigaff. Husband of Mary (McKillops) Ion of Nakusp, Arrow Lakes, British Columbia who he married in 1910 in Revelstoke, B.C.
Missing in action on 30 October 1917 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Stronord School Memorial in the Outdoor Centre, Minnigaff.
