Hi I was looking through the long list of First WW died on this site. Noticed that one of the names was down as Pvt Andrew F Crozier. It should be Andrew F Grozier 86081 44th Coy machine Gun Corps dod 02/08/1917. I have photo's of another Church memorial in Linlithgow St Ninians which I will post in due course. he is also on that memorial

"Yesterday afternoon the remains of Private Andrew Douglas of the 2/10th Battalion Royal Scots (Territorials), victim of the gun accident which occurred on Tuesday at Berwick, were interred with military honours at Linlithgow cemetery. The body was conveyed to the burying ground, preceeded by the pipe band of the 9th Battalion H.L.I. The firing party was drawn from the same battalion."

It seems there are calls in the town to relocate the memorial to a more public place.

CALLS were made this week for a more public war  memorial in Linlithgow.

After recent Remembrance Day services, residents contacted the Journal and Gazette wanting the town’s memorial in a more public area rather than in St Michael’s Parish Church where it is currently situated. There was also concern that those killed in WWII were not included on the stonework but this was found not to be the case. Six service personnel who died after VJ Day are also included in the Roll of Honour.

Douglas Hanley of Hillhouse Farm wrote: “Access to this is limited which is poor and, if you are a visitor to the town, hard to find. This memorial should not be in a church but in a public place for all to view.”

It is thought the decision to place the war memorial in St Michael’s came from the former town council and may have been originally in the old Linlithgow Academy, now Low Port Primary.

Murdoch Kennedy said: “My view has always been that the town should have a public memorial. The Rose Garden has often been mentioned as a suitable place.”

St Michael’s is open to the public from 10.30am-1pm, and a church spokesman said the brass plaques on the memorial could attract thieves if it was more public and the Roll of Honour could not be displayed as it is at present.

"Yesterday official intimation was received by his mother at Linlithgow that Private Robert Hood, o the 2nd Royal Scots, had been killed in action on December 14. Early in January a comrade who had been in the same regiment wrote informing Mrs Hood that her son had been killed, but on inquiry at the War Office it was stated that Private Hood was alive. This information was repeated in a further reply sent in April. On a third inquiry the War Office confirmed the original news that Private Hood had been killed in action on December 14."

WILLIAM BURT – age 21 – Pilot Officer/Navigator (129765) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
William was educated at Daniel Stewart's College in Edinburgh and was working in the town clerk's department while studying law at Edinburgh University when he enlisted in 1941. He was commissioned from Sergeant (1556981) in August 1942 and was onboard an Avro Anson from RAF Silloth in Cumberland which crashed near Wigton in Cumberland.
Son of William and Caroline Burt, of 28 Belmont Gardens, Murrayfield, Edinburgh.
His father had been an English master at Dumfries Academy, at Langholm and was at Linlithgow, West Lothian.
Grandson of John Richardson of The Bungalow, Annan.
Died on Service on 1 January 1943.
Commonwealth War Grave – Annan Cemetery.
Named on the Linlithgow War Memorial, on the Edinburgh University Roll of Honour and on the Old College Memorial. (but not on Annan)

2nd Lt Hugh M Turnbull.

This man is also named on the Ettrickbridge War Memorial in Kirkhope Parish Church in Selkirkshire - but I don't know why!
There is only one HUGH TURNBULL, Royal Scots on the CWGC database and on the SNWM so it must be the same man (mustn't it?)

HUGH TURNBULL 4th ROYAL SCOTS.

Hugh Macdiarmid Turnbull – age 24 – Lieutenant, 1/4th Battalion (Queen's Edinburgh Rifles) Royal Scots attached to the 5th/6th Battalion.
Hugh enlisted at the outbreak of war as Private (1256) and landed with the 1/4th Battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was evacuated home due to illness. He was commissioned in December 1915 and spent some months in Ireland before he was posted to France in July 1917.

Born 1893 in Darjeeling, India. (Source:1901 census and SNWM)
Son of the late Mary Jane (Macdiarmid) Turnbull formerly of Callander, Perthshire (died 1898) and of the late Rev. Archibald Turnbull, B.D. former minister of Darjeeling, India (died 1905) and step-son of Katherine Agnes (Ferguson or Wemyss) Turnbull of Poldrait, Linlithgow who had married in 1900 in St. Giles, Edinburgh.

Killed in Action on 5 September 1917 and buried in Coxyde Military Cemetery, Belgium.

Pvt Robert J C Blake

Named on the Galashiels War Memorial in Selkirkshire as:

PTE. ROBERT BLAKE. Scots Guards
Robert John Currie Blake – age 20 – Private (17205) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.
Robert was employed in the Goods Office of the North British Railway Company when he enlisted in the 1st Household Battalion as Trooper (3300). He went to France in January 1918 and was posted to the Scots Guards. Robert died in the 11th Stationary Hospital in Rouen.

Born 1898 in Linlithgow, West Lothian. Son of Robert Currie Blake and of Annie Turnbull Robertson (Blake) of Cross Bakery, 79 High Street, Linlithgow.
Robert's parent had married in 1884 in Galashiels but in the early 1890's the family moved to Linlithgow.
Died of Wounds on 12 September 1918 and buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France.

Note: I do not see his name on the NBR memorial.
