The memorial is situated on the North wall of Eaglesham Parish Church.

I was interested to see that there are more casualties listed for the Second World War than for the first.
Is there any particular reason?

The only reason I can think it could be is that either the village expanded in size between the wars or that they widened the scope of who to include after the Second World War.

I'm afraid I don't have a definite answer.

If memory serves me right Eaglesham was a major pit area. Is it possible that fewer men from Eaglesham went to the first world war because they were down the pit and Bevan boys did the work during the second.

Just a thought to add to the mixing bowl.

Unveiled on Saturday the 3rd of April 1920.

(Glasgow Herald 5th April 1920)
"The war memorial for the parish of Eaglesham, which has been placed on the outer wall of the lower part of the steeple of the parish church, was unveiled on Saturday. The dedicatory prayer was offered by the Rev. D. Langlands Seath, minister of the parish, and thereafter Mr William Browning, chairman of the memorial committee, introduced Mr Joseph Johnstone, M.P. for East Renfrewshire, who performed the unveiling ceremony."

I can't find those named Newns of Perratt on CWGC. There is a James Perrat of Glasgow, but no Johns.

Anne posted the first named, Melville, as Loos casualty so it may help with identifying the others if it is date. It's not common but I have seen it elsewhere.

John Perratt was known as Jack Perratt. You can find his details on the NAC CEF attestation papers:

"Deaths on Service.
GILMOUR.- Killed in action on the 15th September, Alastair Stuart Gilmour, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, youngest son of Allan Gilmour, late of Eaglesham, Renfrewshire."

Same publication, day, date:- "CASUALTIES Notes on Officers Mr ALASTAIR STUART GILMOUR. A. and S.H. Second Lieutenant Alastair Stuart Gilmour, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, who was killed in action on September 15, was the youngest brother of Captain Angus C. Gilmour, laird of Eaglesham. He was born at Eaglesham House and educated at Harrow and Cambridge. In 1910 he married a daughter of Mr Bell, North End, Durham, and went to reside in London, where he was engaged as a stockbroker. He joined the London Yeomanry as a private, and on obtaining his commission was posted to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Second Lieutenant Gilmour, who was 29 years of age, is survived by his wife and a family of two. He had been only a few days back in the fighting line after recovering from wounds when he was killed."
