CARMICHAEL, ALEX. Pte. CAMn.H.
Alexander Carmichael – age 24 – Private (S/22180) 6th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Alexander was a clerk with the British Linen Bank at George Street in Edinburgh and was living at 25 Spotiswoode Road when he enlisted.
Born 1892 in Coldstream. Son of the late George Carmichael (died 1908) and Jane (Clark) Carmichael of Eaglesheugh, Coldstream.
Missing in Action on 24 August 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Rodger memorial in Coldstream Parish Church and on the British Linen Bank memorial in Edinburgh.

Archibald Carmichael – age 26 – Second Lieutenant, “D” Battery, 108th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
Archibald was educated at Bootham School in York before he worked with his father in the family business and he served as a Trooper in the Lothians and Border Horse Yeomanry from March 1912. He was mobilised in August 1914. He went as Corporal (1255) with his squadron to France in September 1915 but they were moved to Salonica in northern Greece in November. He returned home in July 1917 and he was commissioned in the RFA in February 1918. Archibald had been posted to France just four weeks before he was fatally wounded and he died in the 61st Casualty Clearing Station.
Born 1892 in Coldstream. Son of Provost Robert Carmichael and Euphemia Bell (Dickman) Carmichael of Rosybank, Coldstream.
Died of Wounds on 22 May 1918 and buried in Vignacourt British Cemetery, France.
Also named on a memorial in Coldstream Parish Church and on the Bootham School memorial.

George Gordon Carmichael – age 22 – Lieutenant, 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George was educated at the Royal High School in Edinburgh. He enlisted in November 1915 and served as Corporal (C/12672) in the 21st Battalion (Yeoman Rifles) King's Royal Rifle Corps when they went to France in May 1916. He was selected for officer training and was commissioned in the KOSB in September 1916. He joined his battalion in Egypt and served in Palestine where he was promoted in March 1918 just before the battalion moved to France. George was buried at Ouichy but was re-interred after the war.
Born 1895 in Spittal, Berwick-on-Tweed, Northumberland. Son of Provost Robert Carmichael and Euphemia Bell (Dickman) Carmichael of Rosybank, Coldstream.
Killed in Action on 1 August 1918 and buried in Raperie British Cemetery, Villemontoire, France.
Also named on a memorial in Coldstream Parish Church and on the Royal High School memorial and Roll of Honour.

EDGAR, JOSEPH. Pte. K.O.S.B.
Joseph Edgar – age 17 – Private (6794) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Joseph was an ironmonger in Coldstream when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1898 in Cummertrees, Dumfriesshire. Son of George and Elizabeth (Rae) Edgar of 43 Duke Street and of 12 Leet Street, Coldstream.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on a memorial in Coldstream Parish Church.


ELLIOT, NICHOL. 2nd Lt. NhptSh.
Nichol Elliot – age 45 – Second Lieutenant, 1st Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment attached to the 2nd Trench Mortar Battery.
Nichol was a student of colour photography and he spent some years developing his skills in Vienna, where he married in 1910, before taking a post in Canada in 1912. He returned to the UK in October 1915 and enlisted as Private (5574) in the 1/28th Battalion (Artists Rifles) London Regiment. He joined his battalion in France in March 1916 and served as Private (761022) until he was commissioned in April 1917.
Born 1873 in Tweedmouth, Berwick-on-Tweed. Son of the late William Elliot (died 1919) and Mary (Briggs) Elliot of Luke's Brae, Coldstream. Husband of Alice (Maddock) Elliot of 18 Emperor's Gate, Kensington, London who he married in 1910 in Vienna.
Missing in Action on 10 July 1917 and named on the Nieuport Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Rodger memorial in Coldstream Parish Church.


ELLIOT, ROBERT. Sig. R.F.A.
Robert Elliot – age 19 – Gunner (186855) “A” Battery, 51st Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
Robert enlisted in early 1916 and joined his battery in France.
Born 1898 in Coldstream. Son of William Marshall Elliot (chemist and druggist) and of Isabella Mary (Ryle) Elliot of 94 High Street, Coldstream and of Birgham, Eccles, Berwickshire.
Died of Wounds on 6 June 1917 and buried in Aubigny Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Also named on a memorial in Coldstream Parish Church and on Eccles Parish War Memorial.


FAIRBAIRN, WILLm. Pte. K.O.S.B.
William Fairbairn – age 22 – Private (4339) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers
William was employed as a painter in Coldstream and was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1892 in Coldstream. Son of George and Henrietta (Tait) Fairbairn of 7 Leet Street, Coldstream.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

FERGUSON, JOHN. Capt. R.N.R.
John Ferguson – age 65 – Pilot, (Cinque Ports Pilot) Lighthouse and Pilotage Authorities.
John was the pilot on the Norwegian cargo ship "Ren" as she made her way from France to Tyneside to take on a cargo of coal. She went missing with all hands and the wreck lies off the coast of Lowestoft, Suffolk.
Born 1852 in Coldstream. Son of the late Andrew and Janet (Johnstone) Ferguson of Coldstream. Husband of the late Margaret Oliphant (Ferguson) Ferguson (died 1915 in the Victoria Infirmary in Glasgow) who he married in 1895 in Kirkham, Fylde, Lancashire.
Lost at Sea on 29 October 1917 and named on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.
Also named on The Cinque Ports Pilots Memorial in St. Mary's Church, Dover, Kent.


FORD, JAMES S. Pte. SEAfh.H.
James Smith Ford – age 25 – Private (S/6543) 1st Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
James had enlisted as Private (9447) in the Seaforths in 1906 and at the end of his term of service he went to America. He had been working as a steel hardener when he returned from New York in December 1914 to re-enlist and he joined his battalion in France in February 1915 but he was killed three months later.
Born 1889 in Coldstream. Son of Thomas Bell Ford (died 1916) and of Marion (Smith) Ford of Duns Road, Coldstream.
Missing in Action on 9 May 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Also named on a memorial in Coldstream Parish Church.

John Galbraith – age 19 – Corporal (4414) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a plumber in Coldstream and was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB. He he was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1896 in Swinton, Berwickshire. Son of Constable Alexander and Janet (Wood) Galbraith of Leitholm Police Station and of Gordon, Berwickshire.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on a memorial in Coldstream Parish Church, on the Lauder Burgh and Parish War Memorial and on the Lauder Parish Church memorial in Berwickshire.


HAIG, ANDREW N. Pte. K.O.S.B.
Andrew Newton Haig – age 21 – Private (4380) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew was brought up from a young boy by his late grandfather Andrew and his aunt Agnes Stevenson Haig at 49 High Street, Coldstream. Like his grandfather and father he was a saddler and he enlisted in the Territorial 4th KOSB in November 1912. He he was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1893 in Croydon, Surrey. Son of John Brown Haig and of Amy Mary (Newton) Haig of Margate, Kent and of High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire who married in 1890 in Coldstream.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on a memorial in Coldstream Parish Church.


HARDIE, ROBERT. C.S.M. K.O.Y.L.I.
Robert Hardie – age 30 – Company Sergeant Major (18853) 10th Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.
Robert was employed by a chemist in Coldstream when he enlisted as a Private in September 1914. He was a Sergeant when he landed in France with his battalion in September 1915 and survived the battalion's initial action just a couple of weeks later at Loos.
Born 1886 in Coldstream. Son of the late William Hardie (died 1898) and of Abigail (Ledgerwood) Hardie of 2 Abbey Road, Coldstream.
Missing in Action on 1 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the St. Mary's and All Souls Episcopal Church memorial in Coldstream.

HARLE, Rchd. J.P. M.C. Capt. A.&S.H.
Richard John Paterson Harle, Military Cross – age 21 – Captain, King's Own Scottish Borderers attached to the 1/7th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
Richard was educated at Berwickshire High School in Duns and joined the Edinburgh University Officer Training Corps in 1914. He enlisted as Private (2308) in the 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots and landed with his battalion at Le Havre in February 1915. He was commissioned in the Argylls that month and returned to the UK in March before joining the 1/7th Battalion in France. He was transferred officially to the KOSB in September 1916 and in the following year he was awarded a Military Cross for his action during the attack on Vimy Ridge in 9-11 April as 2nd Lt. (acting Capt.) Richard John Patterson Harle, K.O.S.B., attd. A. & S. Highrs.
“For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He led his company in the attack with great courage and initiative. He captured two machine guns and over sixty prisoners. He set a splendid example throughout
Richard was fatally wounded at Reoux and died in the 24th General Hospital at Etaples.
Born 1896 in Coldstream. Son of George Adam Moffat Harle and of Annie Jack (Haig) Harle of Dunedin Villa, Coldstream.
Died of Wounds on 26 April 1917 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.

HERMISTON, MARK. Pte. K.O.S.B.
Mark Hermiston – age 39 – Private (201456) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
The Hermiston family had moved from Roxburghshire to Coldstream by 1911 and in 1915 Mark was a labourer, living at 23 Leet Street, Coldstream. His service number indicates that he was in the 4th KOSB before he was posted to the 6th Battalion in France.
Born 1878 in Eckford, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Janet (Halliday) Hermiston (died 1915) and of William Hermiston of Coldstream.
Missing in Action on 3 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on a memorial in Coldstream Parish Church.


HUNTLY, ROBERT. Pte. K.O.S.B.
Robert Huntly – age 24 – Private (25659) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1893 at Eddington Mill, Chirnside, Berwickshire. Son of James and Agnes (Fullerton) Huntly of Hirsel Poultry Farm, Coldstream.
Killed in Action on 20 September 1917 and buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium.

JOHNSTONE, JAs. Pte. K.O.S.B.
James Johnston – age 33 – Private (7485) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was employed as a plasterer at Ford, Northumberland when he enlisted and he joined the 2nd KOSB in France in December 1914 but he was wounded in February 1915 and evacuated home. He was then posted to the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli and, after the withdrawal to Egypt, he moved with them to France in March 1916.
Born 1883 in Coldstream. Son of the late Robert Johnstone (died 1898) and of the late Margaret (Thompson) Johnston (died 1907) formerly of Coldstream. Husband of Mary (Tocher) Johnston of 42 Duke Street, Coldstream who he married in 1908 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 14 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the St. Mary's and All Souls Episcopal Church memorial in Coldstream.


KENNEDY, H.B-H. L.Cpl. K.O.S.B.
Henry Baillie Hamilton Kennedy – age 36 – Private (30024) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Henry had previously served for 7 years with the Cameron Highlanders including during the South African War. He was working as a labourer when he enlisted in the Army Reserve in August 1914 and as Private (17799) he joined the 2nd KOSB in France in November 1915. He was wounded in May 1916 and in January 1917 he was found to be unfit for active service. He was discharged from the army in February but he obviously re-enlisted and joined the 1st KOSB in France. Henry died of pneumonia in the 30th General Hospital in Calais.
Born 1882 in Coldstream. Son of the late Jane (Gibson) Kennedy (died 1906) and of Peter Kennedy of Lennel Village, Coldstream.
Died on Active Service on 1 May 1918 and buried in Les Baraques Military Cemetery, Sangatte, France.
Also named on the St. Mary's and All Souls Episcopal Church memorial in Coldstream.

John Kennedy – age 48 – Private (7063) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a groom when he enlisted as Private (5306) in the Seaforth Highlanders in August 1895. He served for 6 years in Malta and Egypt including at Khartoum before being transferred to the Army Reserve in March 1903. He was discharged from the army in August 1911 and re-enlisted in August 1914 as Private (7063) in August 1914. He went to France and joined the 2nd KOSB in December but he was wounded in April 1915 and evacuated to England. He was discharged from the army as no longer physically fit for war service in March 1916. John was living at New Pentland, Loanhead, Midlothian when he suffered a fractured skull after being hit by a motor taxi-cab near Bilston and he died in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
Born 1868 in Coldstream. Son of the late Jane (Gibson) Kennedy (died 1906) and of Peter Kennedy of Lennel Village, Coldstream.
Died on 14 October 1916. Burial place not known.
Also named on the St. Mary's and All Souls Episcopal Church memorial in Coldstream.

KINGHORN, DAVID. Pte. K.O.S.B.
David Kinghorn – age 31 – Private (201183) Depot, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
David was a carter when he enlisted in November 1915 and he served with the 1/4th (Border) Battalion as Private (8168 & 201183). He was discharged from the army in March 1919 due to the effects of wounds and was awarded a Silver War Badge (495905) but he died of cancer in the Bellahouston Hospital in Glasgow in the following year.
Born 1889 in Coldsteam as David Halliday Kinghorn. Son of the late William Kinghorn (died January 1920) and of Margaret Jane (Lothian) Kinghorn of Coldstream. Husband of Agnes (Gall) Kinghorn of 3 Church Close, Coldstream who he married in 1919 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire.
Died on 28 September 1920 and buried in Lennel Old Churchyard, Coldstream. (CWG)


LANDRETH, JAMES. Pte. R.S.
James Landreth – age 30 – Private (351574) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
James was an athlete and a member of the Coldstream Football Club and was in business with his father as a grocer. He enlisted in the Royal Scots as Private (4419) in March 1916 and he joined his battalion in France in December.
Born 1888 in Cornhill, Berwick-on-Tweed, Northumberland. Son of John and Jane (Ford) Landreth of High Street, Coldstream.
Missing in Action on 20 September 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on a memorial in Coldstream Parish Church.

LITTLE, JOCK. M.C. Lieut. R.E.
John Little, Military Cross – age 21 – Captain, 90th Field Company, Royal Engineers.
John was educated at Wellington College in Berkshire from 1911 until 1914 when he moved to the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich in London. He was commissioned from there in February 1915 and went to France as a 2nd Lieutenant in October 1915. He was awarded a Military Cross for his actions on the day before he died. “On October 16th. 1918, he was detailed to make a reconnaissance of a river crossings in the vicinity of Harlebeke. Despite machine-gun fire and sniping he got to a very exposed position during daylight, and brought back very valuable information. He did splendid work throughout operations, and by his marked courage and keenness set a very fine example to his men.”
John was buried in the Winkel (St Eloi) Churchyard but he was re-interred in 1920.
Born 1897 in Hawford, Ombersley, Droitwich, Worcestershire. Son of John and Agnes Stewart (Usher) Little of Hawkslaw, Coldstream.
Died of Wounds on 17 October 1918 and buried in Cement House Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on a memorial in Coldstream Parish Church and on the Wellington College memorial.


MATTHEW, ARCHd. Pte. R.S.
Archibald Matthew – age 20 – Private (375667) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Born 1897 in Coldstream. Son of Peter and Agnes (Guthrie) Matthew of Mason's Cottage, Coldstream.
Killed in Action on 24 March 1918 and buried in Combles Communal Cemetery Extension, France.


MATTHEW, JOHN R. Gnr. R.F.A.
John Robert Matthew – age 23 – Gunner (650667) 402nd Battery, 5th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
John enlisted in July 1915 and went to France as Gunner (1987) in January 1916. He was wounded and evacuated to hospital in Manchester in August. He returned to the Front in December 1916.
Born 1894 in Coldstream. Son of John and Alice Swanston (Moffat) Matthew of 6, Lukes Brae, Coldstream.
Killed in Action on 22 October 1917 and buried in Canada Farm Cemetery, Belgium.

MIDDLEMAS, John F. Pte. K.O.S.B.
John Fairgrieve Middlemas – age 25 – Private (7229) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was an assistant grocer in Coldstream when he enlisted in November 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in early June 1915 but at the end of the month he was wounded and evacuated to hospital in Alexandria, Egypt. He rejoined his battalion in August but he was shot by a sniper three weeks later.
Born 1890 in Eccles, Berwickshire. Son of Andrew and Margaret (Fairgrieve) Middlemas of Market Square, Coldstream.
Killed in Action on 4 September 1915 and buried in Redoubt Cemetery, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on a memorial in Coldstream Parish Church.

John's father Andrew a postman in Coldstream enlisted (aged 51) in the KOSB in September 1914 and served with the Royal Defence Corps and the Labour Corps until he was discharged due to ill health in August 1918.

James Mitchell – age 20 – Private (S/11243) 6th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
James was a footman at Dreghorn Castle in Colinton, Edinburgh when he enlisted and he landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915.
Born 1896 in Coldstream. Son of James and Ellen (Larment) Mitchell of 35 Duke Street, Coldstream.
Missing in Action on 19 July 1916 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on a memorial in Coldstream Parish Church and on the St. Mary's and All Souls Episcopal Church memorial in Coldstream.


McCASKIE, JAMES. Sgt. SEAfh.H.
James McCaskie – age 26 – Corporal (S/7142) 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
In 1901 the family were at Carham Village in Northumberland where the father William was a gardener and they came to Coldstream in about 1905.
James was a hairdresser in Coldstream when he enlisted. He joined his battalion in France in May 1915.
Born 1891 Maxwelltown, Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of William and Alice (McCulloch) McCaskie of The Dovecote, Coldstream. Husband of Jessie Hyslop (Ford) McCaskie of 14 Market Street, Coldstream who he married in 1911 in Coldstream.
Missing in Action on 3 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on a memorial in Coldstream Parish Church.

John McCaskie – age 24 – Second Lieutenant, 6th Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment.
John served his apprenticeship as a seedsman in Coldstream and was employed in Darlington when he enlisted as Private (2711) in the Durham Light Infantry in 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in April 1915 and served for two years until, as Private (200302), he was commissioned in July 1917.
Born 1893 in Kilmore & Kilbride, Argyllshire - indexed as John McCuloch McAskie. Son of William and Alice (McCulloch) McCaskie of The Dovecote, Coldstream.
Missing in Action on 23 March 1918 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.

McDOUGAL, Alex. E. Lieut. H.L.I.
Alexander Ernest McDougal – Age 27 – Lieutenant, 10th/11th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Alexander was educated in the Edinburgh Institution and was a partner in the family grocery business in Coldstream. He enlisted as Pioneer (56819) in the Royal Engineers in November 1914 and was commissioned in April 1915. He joined the HLI in France in February 1916 and was promoted in July 1917. Alexander was wounded at Cambrai on 8 February 1918 died in the 3nd Red Cross Hospital in Rouen.
Born 1889 in Coldstream. Son of the late John McDougal (died 1914) and of Mary (Meikle) McDougal of Leet View, Coldstream.
Died of Wounds on 20 February 1918 and buried in St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.
Also named on the Rodger memorial in Coldstream Parish Church.


McQUEEN, ANDw. Pymr. Lieut. R.N.R.
Andrew McQueen – age 26 – Paymaster Lieutenant, R.F.A. Hughli, Royal Naval Reserve.
Andrew was a clerk with the Bank of Scotland at the Sauchiehall Street Branch in Glasgow when he enlisted in February 1915 and he served as an assistant paymaster throughout the war. He was promoted in February 1919 and was onboard the Royal Fleet Auxiliary “Hughli” when she sailed from Dover in bad weather with supplies for Ostende. She was engulfed by the heavy seas and sank off the Belgian coast at Nieuport. Andrew's body was washed ashore.
Born 1892 in Edinburgh. Son of Andrew and Isabella Meikle (Watson) McQueen of High Street, Coldstream.
Died on Service on 26 April 1919 and buried in Oostende New Communal Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on a memorial in Coldstream Parish Church and on the Bank of Scotland memorial and Roll of Honour in Edinburgh.

NEIL, ROBERT. Pte. R.H.
Robert Neil – age 24 – Private (S/7873) 1/7th (Fife) Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
In 1911 Robert aged 18 was a house painter living with his uncle William and grandmother Catherine Neil in Lennel Newtown. He landed with the 10th Black Watch at Boulogne in September 1915. In November the battalion moved to Salonica in northern Greece where they remained until July 1918 when they returned to France. At some point Robert transferred to the 1/7th Battalion.
Born 1892 at Newtown in Coldstream. Son of Margaret Neil. Nephew of William Neil of Lennel Newtown, Coldstream.
Killed in Action on 24 October 1918 and buried in Thiant Communal Cemetery, France.
Also named on the St. Mary's and All Souls Episcopal Church memorial in Coldstream.


NEILANS, THOs. R. L.Cpl. K.O.Y.L.I.
Thomas Ruffle Neilans – age 25 – Lance Corporal (24688) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.
Thomas had lived and worked with a butcher at Norham-on-Tweed, Northumberland for a number of years when he enlisted in May 1915.
Born 1892 in Coldstream. Son of the late John Neilans (died 1902) and of Jane (Ruffle) Neilans of 45 Duke Street, Coldstream.
Missing in Action on 2 December 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on a memorial in Coldstream Parish Church, on the St. Mary's and All Souls Episcopal Church memorial in Coldstream and on the Norham War Memorial.


OLIVER, JOHN. Pte. K.O.S.B.
John Oliver – age 28 – Private (9344) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was serving with the 1st KOSB at Lucknow in India in August 1914. The battalion moved to Egypt in November and then to England in December. They sailed again in March 1915 and landed at Cape Helles on Gallipoli on 25 April.
Born 1887 in Coldstream. Son of the late Elizabeth Oliver (died 1914). His older sister Elizabeth was named as his legatee.
Missing in Action on 26 April 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the St. Mary's and All Souls Episcopal Church memorial in Coldstream.

Thomas Weatherson Ormiston – age 19 – Lance Corporal (49869) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Thomas was an apprentice draper in his father's business in Coldstream when he enlisted in the 54th Training Battalion in March 1917. He joined his battalion in France on 3 March 1918 but he was killed three weeks later.
Born 1899 in Coldstream. Son of Thomas Shiel Ormiston and of Janet (Weatherson) Ormiston of 105 High Street, Coldstream.
Missing in Action on 24 March 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, France.
Also named on the Rodger memorial in Coldstream Parish Church.


PEARSON, DAVID. Pte. CAMn.H.
David Pearson – age 19 – Private (200817) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
In 1901 David, aged 4, born Coldstream, seems to have been placed in the Orphanage at Aberlour in Banffshire. He enlisted as Private (4403) in the 1/4th Cameron Highlanders at Kingussie in Inverness-shire and was transferred to the 1st Battalion in the summer of 1916.
Born 1896 in Coldstream as David Stirling Pearson. Son of the late Helen (Stirling) Pearson (died 1896) and of Robert Pearson of 37 Duke Street, Coldstream.
Missing in Action on 3 September 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the St. Mary's and All Souls Episcopal Church memorial in Coldstream.

Thought to be:
John Dempster Pringle – age 40 – Sapper (58267) 80th Field Company, Royal Engineers.
John had served his apprenticeship in Coldstream and was a tailor in Darlington, County Durham when he enlisted in December 1914. He landed with his company in France in July 1915.
Born 1877 in Coldstream as John Dempster. Son of the late Agnes (Dempster) Pringle (died 1888) and step-son of John Pringle who had married in 1879 in Coldstream. Husband of Frances Eleanor (Storey) Pringle of 17 Anns Terrace, Hope Town, Darlington who he married in 1901 in Newcastle upon Tyne.
Missing in Action on 6 August 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, France.
Also named on the Darlington War Memorial Hospital memorial.

Joseph Purves – age 18 – Private (18428) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Joseph joined the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli in September 1915. At some point he was transferred to the 2nd Battalion in France.
Born 1898 in Newcastle upon Tyne as Joseph Henry Purves. Son of the late Annie (Robinson) Purves (died 1906) and of the late John Edmison Purves (died 1916) of 7 High Street, Coldstream. Brother of Mrs Hannah Fairbairn of 7 High Street, Coldstream, Mrs Alice Coutts and Mrs Martha Coutts and Mrs Annie Ledgerwood of 42 Duke Street, Coldstream.
Missing in Action on 30 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

Born 1891 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Son of Robert Hardie Reid and of Catherine (Bonner) Reid of the Commercial Hotel, Coldstream
Missing in Action on 28 November 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.

Thomas Reid – age 23 – Private (S/14594) 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Thomas was employed at Whiteburn Farm, Grantshouse, Berwickshire when he enlisted in October 1915 and he joined his battalion in France in May 1916.
Born 1892 at Nisbet Hill, Edrom, Berwickshire. Son of Peter and Helen (Hardie) Reid of Hawkslaw, Coldstream and of Somerset House, Chirnside, Berwickshire.
Died of Wounds on 21 July 1916 and buried in Mericourt-l'Abbe Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Also named on a memorial in Coldstream Parish Church.


RENTON, JOHN. Cpl. K.O.S.B.
John Renton – age 28 – Corporal (200317) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a well known local footballer and a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB. He was mobilised in August 1914 and as Private (4515) he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. Later he served in Egypt and in Palestine before the battalion moved to France in April 1918.
Born 1889 in Fogo, Berwickshire. Son of Betsy Renton of 14 Market Square, Coldstream.
Killed in Action on 1 September 1918 and buried in Queant Road Cemetery, Buissy, France.
Also named on a memorial in Coldstream Parish Church.


RENTON, Robt. D.C.M. Sgt. SEAfh.H.
I cannot trace any official record of the award of a Distinguished Conduct Medal.
Robert Renton – age 24 – Sergeant (331) 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Robert enlisted in July 1909 and he landed with his battalion at Boulogne in August 1914. He was wounded in both legs in May 1915 and he was evacuated to hospital in Dundee but within six weeks he was back with his battalion. Robert was killed by a sniper at Beaumont Hamel.
Born 1891 in Edrom, Berwickshire. Son of Peter Kerr Renton and of Margaret (Brown) Renton of Fireburn Mill Coldstream and of East New Biggen, Norham-on-Tweed, Northumberland.
Killed in Action on 7 August 1915 and buried in Sucrerie Military Cemetery, Colincamps, France.
Also named on the Rodger memorial in Coldstream Parish Church.

Andrew Gilbert Robson, Military Medal – age 30 – Sergeant (16387) 15th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry.
Andrew was a gardener in South Shields when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in September 1915 and was promoted to Corporal in December 1916 and to Sergeant in February 1917. His award of a M.M. was made in January 1918.
Born 1889 at Wark-on-Tyne, Carham, Glendale, Northumberland. Son of the late Helen Stevenson (Turnbull) Robson (died 1916) and of Andrew Robson of Leet Street, Coldstream (died November 1918)
Killed in Action on 29 May 1918 and buried in Hermonville Military Cemetery, France.


SANDERSON, Wm. Pte. K.O.S.B.
William Sanderson – age 35 – Private (7555) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William lived in Lennel Newtown, Coldstream and was employed as a tailor in the High Street, Coldstream when he enlisted in December 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1880 in Norham, Berwick-on-Tweed, Northumberland. Son of the late Robert Sanderson (died 1907) and of Mary (Thompson) Sanderson of North Back Lane, Norham.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Rodger memorial in Coldstream Parish Church.


SCOTT, ADAM. Trooper L.&B.H.
Thought to be:
Adam Scott – age 29 – Sapper (65405) 56th Field Company, Royal Engineers.
Adam was an engineer when he enlisted in Coldstream in January 1915. He was posted to the No.1 Depot Company at Deganwy in North Wales in September before going to France to join the 56th Field Company in February 1916. Adam was buried in the R.E. Beaver Farm Cemetery at Kemmel and was re-interred in December 1919.
Born 1887 at Mindrum Farm, Norham, Berwick, Northumberland. Son of William and Rachel (Bradford) Scott of Mindrum. of 5 Duke Street, Coldstream and of 6 Foundry Cottages, Tweedmouth, Northumberland.
Killed in Action on 22 May 1916 and buried in Wytschaete Military Cemetery, Belgium.
