The soldier made from various shrubs by the memorial is a lovely display.
A great idea for this year of remembrance, I've added some pictures to Flickr.

Newspaper article 10 September 1915
KILWINNING CASUALTIES
--------
APPRECIATION OF CORPL. PATERSON
--------
Mrs James Paterson, 14 Bridgend, Kilwinning, has received the following letter of appreciation of her husband, Corpl. Paterson(7914), 5th Royal Scots Fusiliers, who was killed at the Dardanelles, from Lieutenant G. Brotherston: -
Dear Mrs Paterson
I deeply regret the death of Corporal James Paterson(7914), 5th Royal Scots Fusiliers. Though he left "B" Company and had been transferred to "C" Company(on promotion to full Corporal), he left many friends in his old Company, and among them myself. He came to my platoon as Private, and was soon promoted Lance Corporal, and from then had charge of a section which he commanded in an exemplary manner.
I can remember, in particular, his behaviour when we came into the firing line for the first time early in June. His section of the trench required much improvement, and in the heat, and with other disadvantages, it was a marvel to see the way he got his men to work. The section made an excellent job of their portion of the trench, largely due to his leadership.
I should like to convey to you the sympathy of No. 5 Platoon in the loss of such a gallant and able man.
I have no information as to how he met his death, but on my recovery from a wound received the same day, I hope to return to the Battlalion and make enquiry.
I am.
Yours faithfully,
G BROTHERSTON LIEUT. 1/5th Royal Scots Fusiliers"

Irvine Herald
Kilwinning Officer Killed - Lieutenant Thos. Jackson, 5th Royal Scots Fusiliers, was killed in action at the Dardanelles on July 12. He was the eldest son of Mr Thomas Jackson, 24 George Square, Glasgow, and of Smithstone, Kilwinning, and was a partner of the well-known firm of chartered accountants, Messrs Thomson, Jackson, Gourlay and Taylor. Educated at Kelvinside Academy, Lieutenant Jackson received his early military training in the Cadet Corps of that school which was the first Scottish day school to found such a corps. For some time after he left school Lieutenant Jackson was a member of the 1st Lanark Rifle Volunteers. When the war broke out he was a captain in the Ayrshire National Reserve, and was also a commissioner for the Northern District Boy Scouts(Ayrshire). He subsequently joined the Army for active service, receiving a commission in the 5th Royal Scots Fusiliers, with whom he was in training at Ayr and Cambusbarron before going to the Dardanelles about the end of May. Leiutenant Jackson, who was 34 years of age, was a popular member of Kelvinside Academical Club, and was also a director of the Night Asylum for the Houseless."

James is on my family tree on ancestry. His attestation papers dated 16 March 1916 clearly show a date of birth of 14 July 1898 when in fact he was born on 14 July 1900 at Annick Lodge, Irvine. I suspect he changed the date of birth to enable him to enlist. Both his birth record and his parents marriage record - they were married on 29 November 1895 in Kilwinnning - show his mothers name as Agnes Service Niven. The family emigrated to Canada in March 1911 following the fathers death. The monumental inscription, from the records at the North Ayrshire Heritage Centre, is as follows:-
" Erected by Thomas and Janet Niven In memory of their son John born 6th April 1876 died 1st Sept 1876 and who is buried in Patna. Their daughter Annie Faulds born 26th Octr 1877, died 20th March 1878 and is buried in New Cumnock. Their son William born 26th April 1866 died 13th Novr 1881. Janet Wilson wife of the above Thomas Niven died 14th Nov 1886 aged 41 years. The above Thomas Niven died 10th Feby 1902 aged 57½ years. Their son in law James Murray Adrain died 30th Nov 1910 aged 41 years. Their Grandson Pte James Murray Adrain 72nd Canadian Seaforths who died 30th Nov of wounds received in action aged 17½ years Who then can e’er divide us more from Jesus and his love or break the sacred chains that binds the earth to heaven above"
