I will be meeting with Hell Fire Corner owner Tom Morgan on March 6th at the South Staffs pals meeting, I will ask him then if he knows the author of the Celtic thread.

Wee Jock, what can I say about your post. Fantastic reading to a Celtic fan. Could I post your comments on the Great War Forum as they have a thread running at the moment on football teams during the great war.

Yes Kevin you can quote me on the other forum. The more that know the story of Celtic the better. I correspond with an old fella in Canada who originally hails from Glasgow and is ex 15 Para. There is nothing he dont know about Celtic in the wars. I have been on at him to get his years of researching Celtic onto paper. Refusal every time
He is an artist and has painted EVERY player who served. He has sent me pics of his painting if you'd like me to post some. He sent over forty painting to Parkhead and ALL of them have disapeared. He reckons its because they are set into union jack flags and has now decided to re-do them with the Celtic cross in the background.

weejock...it's much too big a diary to post here. It covers about twenty years of his life!

I'll be getting a couple of copies printed up once I'm finished. One for me, one for the Cameronians museum. I'm hoping they might make it available for sale, as it's a fantastic read. One of the few diaries I've read of a man who was actually on the hill at Spion Kop. Makes for thrilling reading.

I also need to do a bit more research on him. I need to contact Clyde to find out if they have any details on him. His Glasgow Police record no longer survives unfortunatey.

David is that the museum at Hamilton or the Cams one at the village of Douglas?
If you contact Kenny at .. info@scottishfootballmuseum.org.uk he will be the man who can find you details on Allan in regards to his football career as they hold all the records and registrations of ALL players who played in scottish football

I am sure Airdire lost aound 4 ex-players in WW2, I was looking up the local papers for Lanarkshire Arnhem men and found mention of it - from memory one was listed as killed, then the following week their was a bit saying it had been a mistake then about 3 weeks later their was another bit listing him as killed again - either the first or last article mentioned the other players killed - unfortunately I didnt get a print off.

Willie Angus VC at the outbreak of war in 1914 had been playing Junior football with Wishaw Athletic, having previously played one trial game for Celtic in 1911 - a friendly at Dumfries. In recent years the story of Willie Angus has been hijacked by certain Celtic factions who have claimed the player as one of their own - despite the truth being that he was in fact rejected by the club after just one outing. His only other involvement with the club was when on September 1915 when he was introduced to the crowds at Celtic Park and Ibrox Stadium on the same day.

The games Angus witnessed that September afternoon were both Glasgow Cup semi-finals - Celtic defeating Third Lanrk 2-0 before a 16,000 audience, Rangers overwhelming Partick Thistle 7-2 in front of 20,000 spectators.

Perhaps the fact that Angus VC connections with the club are minimal is the reason that Celtic are reluctant to erect any kind of long lasting memorial to his memory.

Private 2800 Michael Gilhooly of Celtic enlisted in the 17th ( Glasgow Commercials) Battalion of the Highland Light Infantry and played regularly for the Battalion football team. He was wounded on the opening day of the Batlle of the Somme losing several fingers on his right hand I believe...not sure how his football career went from there on in after the war.

Raith Rovers - local paper, Fife Free Press 30 Jan 2014 says that Raith Rovers will remember its players who served in the First World War with a special commerative away strip next season. The strip features the colours of the Hunting Stewart tartan worn by the Royal Scots Regiment while on the chest there is the word - RemembeR - and a tribute to McCrae's Battalion.
In 1914 seven Raith players - James H Logan; George McLay; Willie Porter; Jimmy Todd; Jimmy Scott; Jock Rattray - signed up to McCrae's Battalion. (Todd, Scott and McLay were killed). Another 10 player, no names, served with other regiments.
