Just a thought, I'm ashamed to say my knowledge of the gaelic is virtually zilch . Is there a forum member who talks the talk? If so could we maybe create a special posting with translations of some of the standard phrases which seem to appear regularly on highland memorials?
Slainte!

I'm not a Gaelic speaker but I have believe there are some Gaelic speakers on a Sutherland genealogy forum. If there are any specific inscriptions we need translated I'm sure I could post it on that forum and hopefully we'll get an answer.
Unless of course we have a Gaelic speaker here.

My wife is not a native gaelic speaker but she has attended classes and has some skill. In the first instance, you could try here!

Thanks all for the response, here's a few examples
Campbelltown:
MCCIRIDH AN CLIU SU SIORRUIDH (its a fancy script so some of the individual letters here might be wrong)
Iona:
AN AINM BIDH BUAN GU SUTHAIN SIOR
Clachan & Fort Augustus:
GUS AM BRIS AN LA
Taynuilt:
DILEAS GU BAS
Inverness:
AN COGADH MOR (= The Great War?)
Fortingall:
BHASAIGH IAD AIR AR SON-NE (Beside this is the inscription 'They Died That We Might Live'...I don't know if the Gaelic translates as exactly the same?)
Aberfeldy:
AIR SON RIGH US DUTHAICH (Again on the opposite tablet is the inscription 'For King and Country' and I supposed the gaelic reads the same)
Strathyre:
MARIDH AN AINM - SAN GU SIORIUDH
Also there are of cours Latin quotes as well! Maybe we could get together a list of useful Latin inscriptions as well?:
Southend and Doune:
NE OBLIVISCARIS |

The Strathyre incription reads: 'Their name liveth forever'. (Maridh may be Mairidh).
Campbelltown inscription is the same one.
Iona: The name will be lasting for ever and ever.
Clachan: Until the day breaks.
Taynuilt: Faithful unto death.
Fortingall They died for our sake.
Aberfeldy: For King and Country.
Hope this helps,
Ian (with considerable help from Lesley) |

I've just come across this online English-Gaelic Dictionary:
http://www.smo.uhi.ac.uk/gaidhlig/faclair/bb/lorg.php
If you want a Gaelic translation of an English word pick 'Beurla' from the drop down menu where it says 'airson an fhacail'
If you want an english translation of a Gaelic word make sure it has 'Gàidhlig'.
