PostPosted: Sun Sep 14, 2014 6:16 pm    Post subject: Kilbirnie Memorial - Lance Corporal Piper John McAllister Reply with quote

The Irvine and Fullarton Times July 31, 1915
"ONE CHUM KILLED THE OTHER WOUNDED
Private Colin McInnes of the 1st/4th R.S.F., has written to his mother in Kilbirnie under date 16th July from an hospital, Cairo, expressing his great sorrow that his companion Lance Corporal Piper John McAllister, had been killed in a charge at the Dardanelles on the 12th inst., about 8 o'clock in the morning. Pte. McInnes says that piper McAllister fell at his side and he held his hands till he died, but life only lasted a minute. All that was left of D Coy., especially the Kilbirnie and Glengarnock lads, send their sympathy. Piper McInnes was himself wounded in the foot at the same time, and was afterwards taken to a Red Cross ship to Egypt. The wound is not serious, he says, and he asks his mother not to worry about him. He is only 21 years of age.
Piper McAllister was a son of Mr and Mrs R. McAllister, Knoxville Road, Kilbirnie. He was in his 23rd year, and was a splendid piper and an enthusiast in that class of music. Pte. McInnes was a pupil of his on the instrument, and they were both members of Kilbirnie and Glengarnock Heather Bell Pipe Band, Lance Corpl. McAllister being the Pipe-Major. Both were members of D Coy, R.S.F., and were almost inseperable companions."
