David I thought that too, but it's not rank, it's unit/regiment.

I'm tempted to say it is his rank as suggested by David.

Hi David,

I think it will be Light Armoured Motor Battery.

The section of "The Long, Long Trail" dealing with the Motor Machine Gun units of the MGC has:- 20 Battery became 13 Light Armoured Motor Battery in England in June 1916.

Would that fit??

A query from WW2. A friend's father was in the RAF and went to Egypt. The acronym on his record is M.E.A.F. We're guessing Middle East but A F has us stumped. Air Force seems too obvious! Action Force? All suggestions welcome.

It is that obvious! Yes, it is Middle East Air Force. There was also a Far East Air Force.

Regards

On Mossgreen war memorial the names are listed under various headings. Under M G C (assume Machine Gun Company) one of names listed is
SGT MAJ Wm LOVE ADS.I.F
I know he served with Australians so A I F, I assume is Australian Imperial Force, but what is the DS?
I know the answer going to be obvious!!!

Nothing obvious, John, but there is a fairly full history of this man at
http://www.aif.adfa.edu.au:8080/showPerson?pid=337402
including that - he was "previously Permanent Staff Sergeant Major, Instructional Staff, Australia"
So perhaps Australian Defence Staff?????
Also this - "Previous military service Instructional Staff;previously served for 21 years in the 2nd Bn, Black Watch, Royal Highland Regiment."

I've had a look at the Mossgreen panel in question. The MGC - Machine Gun Corps - refers to the two soldiers above CSM Love so we can ignore that abbreviation.

Looking at the other abbreviations - and see the way the Highland Light Infantry is written as Highland L.I. - I think that when the new granite panels were made, and probably based on the worn sandstone originals, they mistook AUS.I.F (Australian Imperial Force) for ADS.I.F.

I don't know if it will be possible to find an original unveiling report or booklet from the service but that may have the original inscription?
