Paul,

In that case, I suspect that you are probably correct Wink

Ken

Numbers usually mean a smaller vessel like landing craft of motor launch. Have you noticed his service number and ship number are the same? I didn't think RN officers were given numbers, I wonder if this is an error?

Adam - I think you are correct about naval officers and the lack of service numbers, which would imply that MAS 564 is some kind of vessel.
This seems to be confirmed by the info at naval-history.net
BUIST, Charles E A, Lieutenant, Mas 546, 21 February 1944, killed.

He is the only casualty with that date of death in the Cemetery - so not a ship loss.
As far as I can work out by February 1944 Corsica was in Allied hands and used by the US Army Air Force.

From WW2Talk and Wikipedia

MAS 564 was a captured Torpedo Boat.

Motoscafo Armato Silurante (Italian: "Torpedo Armed Motorboat"), commonly abbreviated as MAS was a class of fast torpedo armed vessel used by the Regia Marina during World War I and World War II.

Hi Ken,

The only marine connection I can find searching the web is with Italian torpedo boats.

Edit: Link - in Allied hands and mined....

In 1938 09 09 the Torpedo boat 'Mas 546' (Under construction ( Italy)) was launched (Italy)
In 1939 03 03 the Torpedo boat 'Mas 546' (Under fitting out ( Italy)) was completed (Italy)
In 1943 09 09 the Torpedo boat 'Mas 546' (.active ( Italy)) was captured (Alliance)
In 1944 02 21 the Torpedo boat 'Mas 546' (.active ( Alliance)) was +++++ mined (Germany)

Cheers Stuart
When you look for casualties by date on naval-history.net (rather than by name) you get

Hannibal
BROWN, Terence P, Seaman, RNPS, LT/JX 405112, MPK
RADFORD, James, Seaman, RNPS, LT/JX 287774, MPK

MAS.546, captured Italian MTB
BUIST, Charles E A, Lieutenant (Hannibal), killed

HMS Hannibal was the naval shore base in North Africa - so it's possible that all three men were lost in the same incident?

RN officers did not have service numbers in WW2 so that is wrong and is being looked into.

Thanks Jim. It is a minor error but it will be good to get it changed.

Ken

That's interesting about a captured Italian boat being used by RN. I wonder what it was used for?
