Impossible to get rid of the shadow of the railings but I think everything can be understood.

UKNIWM Ref No. not listed

Intersting why a small village like this should have 2 memorials, the larger cross having fewer names than that for the members of the Recreation Hall.

The Recreation Rooms WM has a couple of men from Duns listed, which is only a couple of miles away. I wonder if it was a club before the Great War rather than a local village hall.

The Scotsman, 24th November 1920

Bunkle & Preston - A Celtic cross erected at Preston in memory of the men from the united parish of Bunkle & Preston, Berwickshire, was unveiled by the Earl of Home. A brief service in the Village Hall was conducted by Rev L Mair, parish minister.

PRIVATE JOHN COMMON BURNS, 11th A. & S. HIGHLANDERS
DIED 6th APRIL 1918. AGED 27 YEARS.

John Common Burns – age 27 – Private (3590) 11th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
John was a ploughman at Primrose Hill, Preston when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915.
Born 1890 in Coldingham, Berwickshire. Son of the late George Alexander Burns of Primrose Hill, Preston (died 1912) and of Isabella Johnston (Common) Burns of Bogend, Duns.
Killed in Action on 6 April 1918 and buried in Wanquetin Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Also named on the Bunkle Parish Church memorial and on the Preston Recreation Rooms memorial.


PRIVATE JOHN COLVINE, 2nd K.O.S.B.
DIED 28th JUNE 1918. AGED 29 YEARS.

John Colvine – age 29 – Private (40075) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a ploughman with Mr Forrest of Preston when he enlisted in October 1915.
Born 1889 in Chirnside, Berwickshire. Son of the late Andrew Colvine (died 1917) and of Agnes (Scott) Colvine of Preston.
Died of Wounds on 28 June 1918 and buried in Tannay British Cemetery, Thiennes, France.
Also named on the Bunkle Parish Church memorial.


PRIVATE ROBERT FORTUNE, 6th K.O.S.B.
DIED 9th APRIL 1917. AGED 24 YEARS.

Robert Fortune – age 24 – Private (24991) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a ploughman at Blackhouse, Reston, Bunkle when he enlisted. He went to France in September 1916.
Born 1892 at Gainslaw Hill Farm, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland. Son of Cornelius and Jane (Cockbun) Fortune of Blackhouse, Bunkle and of Greenburn, Reston, Coldingham, Berwickshire.
Missing in Action on 9 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Bunkle Parish Church memorial.

PRIVATE JOHN GIBSON, 2nd K.O.S.B.
DIED 3rd JULY 1917. AGED 26 YEARS.

John Gibson – age 26 – Private (40073) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1901 the Gibson family were in Earlston, Berwickshire and in 1911 in Eccles, Berwickshire. John enlisted in October 1915 and joined his battalion's machine gun section in France in September 1916.
Born 1891 in Eyemouth, Berwickshire. Son of John and Agnes (Robertson) Gibson of Swinton Bridgend, Swinton, Berwickshire
Died of Wounds on 3 July 1917 and buried in Roclincourt Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Bunkle Parish Church memorial.


SERGt. WELLWOOD M.AXWELL JOHNSTON, 1/4th K.O.S.B.
DIED 12th JULY 1915. AGED 25 YEARS.

Wellwood Maxwell Johnston – age 25 – Sergeant (4020) 1/4th Battalion (Border) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Wellwood was a former pupil of the Dalbeattie Higher Grade Public School. He was a forester, employed by the Earl of Home at Preston when he joined the Territorial 4th KOSB in April 1908. He was mobilised in August 1914, promoted to Sergeant in April 1915 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1890 at Harbridge, Ringwood, Hampshire. Son of Robert and Mary Agnes (McKnight) Johnston of Angus Cottage Preston and of The Crooks, Coldstream, Berwickshire who had married in 1887 in Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Galipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Bunkle Parish Church memorial, on the Preston Recreation Rooms memorial and on the Coldstream and Dalbeattie War Memorials.

LANCE SERGt. WILLIAM JOHNSTON, 3rd COLDSTREAM GUARDS
DIED 9th OCTOBER 1917. AGED 25 YEARS.

William Johnston – age 25 – Lance Sergeant (16242) 3rd Battalion, Coldstream Guards.
William was serving with the Metropolitan Police when he enlisted at Shepherds Bush, London.
Born 1892 at Harbridge, Ringwood, Hampshire. Son of Robert and Mary Agnes (McKnight) Johnston of Angus Cottage Preston and of The Crooks, Coldstream, Berwickshire who had married in 1887 at Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Missing in Action on 9 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Bunkle Parish Church memorial, on the Preston Recreation Rooms memorial and on the Coldstream and Dalbeattie War Memorials.


PRIVATE JAMES ROBERT BAILLIE SWORD, 1st K.O.S.B.
KILLED IN ACTION FRANCE 26th NOV. 1917 AGED 24.

James Robert Baillie Sword – age 28 – Private (18061) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a shepherd at Potburn, Ettrick, Selkirkshire when he enlisted. He joined the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli in July 1915 and was evacuated home due to illness before he rejoined his battalion in France in July 1916.
Born 1889 in Whittingehame, Haddington, East Lothian. Son of Robert and Mary (Jeffrey) Sword of Drakemire, Bunkle and Preston and of Kirkknowe, Hartshaughmill, Bonchester, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 26 November 1917 and named on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, France.
Also named on the Ettrick Parish War Memorial.
