This Second World War tablet was so highly polished that reflections and glare from the sun were very troublesome so I include a transcription.

Jim

You've beaten me to it posting a transcription. I reckon your doubtful one is

Sorry Adam Embarassed At the moment I'm just working my way through all of the memorials that I've transcribed, region by region, so there isn't much of a pattern to it. Basically if the names aren't transcribed yet, and I have a transcription, I'll post it.
I think your right about Home Guard...I never thought of that. I wonder how many Home Guard casualties there actually were?

Jim

Post away with your transcriptions. I've got plenty of other things to post.

The Home Guard one is interesting. I suppose it depends when they died if they got a CWGC headstone and a mention of a war memorial. If they died on duty I take it they are commemorated. Here's a list of Home Guard from the SNWM database index. I haven't looked up their actual entries or comapred it to the CWGC database so I don't know where they are all from. I've highlighted Greenlaw's Volunteer Burns.

ADAMSON , Archibald , Volunteer , Home Guard , 13-Mar-41
ANDERSON , Kenneth James , Volunteer , Home Guard , 08-Apr-41
BLUE , Alexander , Volunteer , Home Guard , 06-Nov-40
BROWN , James Willocks , Lieutenant , Home Guard , 21-Apr-43
BURNS , John , Volunteer , Home Guard , 13-Mar-41
BURNS , Andrew Common , Volunteer , Home Guard. , 26-Jul-42
CAMERON , Norman , Corporal , Home Guard , 21-Apr-43
CLABBY , James , Volunteer , Home Guard , 06-May-41
CLARK , Andrew , Volunteer , Home Guard , 07-May-41
CONNER , James , Volunteer , Home Guard. , 21-Apr-43
DENNIS , Samuel (Jnr) , Volunteer , Home Guard , 13-Mar-41
EDDIE , Charles William , Volunteer , Home Guard. , 08-Aug-42
GILLILAND , Charles Trotter , Volunteer , Home Guard , 14-Mar-41
GOURLAY , Reuben , Volunteer , Home Guard , 07-Apr-41
HAMILTON , James , Corporal , Home Guard , 14-Mar-41
HORSBURGH , Frederick , Sergeant , Home Guard , 07-Apr-41
INNES , John , Volunteer , Home Guard , 07-May-41
JOHNSTON , Peter , Volunteer , Home Guard , 26-Apr-44
McFARLANE , Archibald , Volunteer , Home Guard , 13-Mar-41
McWILLIAM , Adam , Volunteer , Home Guard , 14-Mar-41
MITCHELL , William Emerson , Volunteer , Home Guard , 14-Mar-41
RAFFERTY , Edward , Volunteer , Home Guard , 14-Mar-41
RAINE , Robert , Volunteer , Home Guard , 14-Mar-41
REYBURN , Hugh Morton , Corporal , Home Guard , 14-Mar-41
RILEY , Richard John , Volunteer , Home Guard , 14-Mar-41
ROBERTSON , Allan McCorkindale , Volunteer (Fire Watcher) , Home Guard , 13-Mar-41
SCOTT , Nathaniel , Volunteer , Home Guard , 14-Mar-41
SMITH , Robert James , Volunteer , Home Guard , 19-May-41
STEEL , William Telfer , Volunteer , Home Guard , 07-Apr-41
THOMSON , William Abel , Volunteer , Home Guard , 03-Jul-43
WATSON , Joseph , Volunteer , Home Guard , 06-May-41
WEST , William Wettinhall , Corporal , Home Guard , 07-Apr-41

There are quite a few names from Spring 1941 which would probably place these men as casualties of the Lufwaffe attacks on the Clyde.

The Scotsman, 18th November 1920

GREENLAW - Greenlaw War Memorial, which was unveiled by Captain CB Balfour, CB, of Newton Don, Lord Lieutenant of Berwickshire, is in the form of a cenotaph, the design being in keeping with the classical architecture of the Town Hall in front of which it stands. It was designed by Mrs du Plat Taylor, Purves, and bears the names of 32 men belonging to the parish who gave their lives in the war.

The Buildings of Scotland - Borders, p339

War Memorial of c1920, in the form of a classical stone sarcophagus. Angle pilasters, architrave, cornice and blocking course, set within a large alcove on a raised platform finished with capped corner piers. Two marble inset panels.
