I have just updated my notes on Adam Byers Hastings (see page 1) having discovered that Adam and his brother David were working as drapers at 30 Hanover Square, Manningham Lane in Bradford when Adam enlisted in January 1916. He was mobilised as Private (4522) in the West Yorkshire Regiment in April and went to France on 26 June 1916.
Just before he left, he was a witness at his brother David's marriage to Mary Jane Sharpe of Longbank, Kirkmahoe, Dumfriesshire on 9 June in Kirkmahoe.
Adam was killed in September 1917 and his name-sake was born in Bradford less than a year later.
He was educated at Belle Vue High School, Bradford and, in 1939 he graduated M.A. at Aberdeen University with Honours in English and then spent a year at the Training Centre. He joined the Army, but later volunteered for the Royal Air Force and was commissioned in 1942. He began operational flying in August 1942.
