UKNIWM Ref No. not listed
OS map ref: NT567183
Location: at the western end of the Main Street.
The names of 26 men who died in the Great War and 4 from the Second World War are inscribed on the base of a 14 ft high monumental cross which was designed by the Hawick architect J.P.Alison. The memorial was paid for by public subscription, over £230 was raised, a similar appeal led to the construction of the village ‘Comrade’s Hall’ which was opened in September, 1921. This wooden building had been used by the Y.M.C.A. at Stobs Camp and was sold to the Denholm inhabitants for £100.

Sad to hear but with a bit of luck someone will have it properly repaired. Any photo of the damage?

I was in Denholm today (buying pies) but I never noticed any damage.
To hit the memorial with a vehicle beggars belief but having seen some drivers on the roads it wouldn't really surprise me.
I will look on Monday if time allows. _________________ There must be a place under the sun where hearts of olden glory grow young ..... |

For those interested, pics of the damage. Note the blue paint. Residents have a very good idea who did this but whether it constitutes proof is another matter.

A great shame indeed. Must have been a high sided vehicle - carelesness or habitual DD ?
Could be hard to rectify given the area of damage on the memorial.
Interested to see the outcome. |

Judging by the height, that has to be a van or truck, finding one with recent damage to the left side (just behind the cab I bet) shouldn't be too difficult and surely the police would prosecute for failing to report? It is a bit of a precarious position though - surprising it has not been hit before. Looks expensive!

| Word is that the culprits are farmers new to the area and it was a trailer. It is not really surprising that it has not been hit before as that road is a very minor road indeed. |

Ian,
It may be a minor road but the eejit that hit the memorial needs more than his eyes tested.
Failing to Stop/Give Particulars after an accident (AC10) (AC20)
The Offence
Being the driver of a mechanically propelled vehicle, owing to the presence of which on a road an accident occurred whereby personal injury or damage was caused to another person or another vehicle or an animal not in the vehicle, or property on or near the road, then failed to stop or on being required by a person to give your name and address and the name and address of the owner and the identity mark of the vehicle, failed to do so. _________________ There must be a place under the sun where hearts of olden glory grow young ..... |
