UKNIWM Ref: 44093

The memorial is in the churchyard of Kirkpatrick Juxta church on the outskirts of Beattock. There is no separate memorial for Beattock.

OS Map Ref: NT 083 101






Georgina Gray is listed on the memorial and her grave is in the churchyard.

ANDERSON, WALTER PTE. BLACK WATCH.
Walter Anderson – age 25 – Private (S/9012) 1/6th (Perthshire) Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Walter worked with his father on Stidriggs Farm, Beattock when he enlisted in May 1915. He joined the 9th Black Watch in France in October. He was wounded in June 1916 and then served with the 1st Battalion before joining the 1/6th Battalion.
Born 1893 in Beattock, Kirkpatrick Juxta. Son of John and Agnes (Dinwoodie) Anderson of Stidriggs, Kirkpatrick Juxta and of Moffat, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 24 October 1918 and buried in Thiant Communal Cemetery, France.

Simon Thomas Cameron Common – age 19 – Lance Corporal (18995) 1/8th (Argyllshire) Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Simon was a clerk with the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company in Moniaive, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted as Private (1524) in the Territorial 5th Kings Own Scottish Borderers in Moniaive in March 1914 and he was mobilised in August. He was appointed as a Drummer in March 1915 and transferred to the Reserve Battalion. He was posted to the Argylls in December 1916 and joined his battalion in France in June 1918. Simon died in the French Ambulance Cherurgical 5/69 at Coeuvres-et-Valsery.
Born 1899 at Tathhill, Kirkpatrick Juxta. Son of William Bell Common and Isabella (Dryden) Common of Tathhill, of Caitloch, Moniaive, of Lochend, Kirkoswald, Maybole, Ayrshire and of North Lodge, Bargany, Girvan, in Ayrshire.
Killed of Wounds on 21 July 1918 and buried in Coeuvres-et-Valsery Communal Cemetery, Aisne, France.
Also named on the Glencairn Parish War Memorial in Moniaive.


CURRIE, JAMES PTE. K.O.S.B.
James Currie – age 24 – Private (24980) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was employed at Holms, Beattockwhen he enlisted in June 1916. He had been in France for 18 months during which time he had been wounded twice. On the first occasion in May 1917 he was treated in hospital at Dannes-Camieres, France. He was then wounded at Ypres in October and evacuated to hospital in Birmingham. He returned to France but was reported missing near Buzancy. His body was recovered from the battlefield two months later.
Born 1893 in Lockerbie, Dryfesdale, Dumfriesshire. Son of James Currie and of Janet Renwick (Grieve) Currie of Templand, Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 23 July 1918 and buried in Buzancy Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the LochmabenWar Memorial.

DODDS, CHARLES PTE. K.O.S.B.
Thought to be:
Charles Dodds – age 23 – Private (S/7010) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Charles was educated at Barnbarroch school, Colvend and at Laurieknowe School, Maxwelltown, Kirkcudbrightshire. He worked as a gardener at the Hydro in Moffat, Dumfriesshire and in the Queen's Park in Glasgow. He enlisted in Glasgow in November 1914 and joined his battalion in France in February 1915 where he served at Nueve Chapelle and at Loos. Charles died of his wounds in the 45th Casualty Clearing Station in Achiet-le-Grand.
Born 1893 in Kettins, Angus. Son of George and Mary (McKenzie) Dodds of 13 College Street, of 29 Galloway Street and of King Street, Maxwelltown. Husband of Ellen Robertson (Johnstone) Dodds of 24 Bengal Street, Pollokshaws, Glasgow and of the Cemetery Lodge in Moffat and who he married in February 1914 in Moffat.
Died of Wounds on 28 April 1917 and buried in Achiet-le-Grand Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Also named on the Glasgow Roll of Honour; and also named on the Maxwelltown Burgh & Troqueer Parish War Memorial and on the Maxwelltown United Free Church Memorial now Maxwelltown West Church, together with his brother Alexander Dodds – age 27 – Lance Corporal (S/7062) 2nd Battalion. Gordon Highlanders who died on 25 September 1915 .


DONALDSON, JAMES PTE. R.S.F.
James Donaldson – age 20 – Private (24036) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
James was a ploughman at Beattock Station when he enlisted as Private (23129) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in February 1916. He was mobilised a month later and was posted to the RSF in France on 13 June. He was killed six weeks later.
Born 1896 in Hutton & Corrie, Dumfriesshire. Son of John and Janet Whan (Warwick) Donaldson of Beattock Station Cottages, Kirkpatrick Juxta.
Missing in Action on 30 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


EDGAR, WILLIAM J. PTE. GORDONS.
William James Edgar – age 23 – Private (S/7528) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
William was a joiner at Raehills Sawmill, St. Ann's, Johnstone, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted on 14 November 1914. He had previous service with the Territorial 5th King's Own Scottish Borderers and he joined the 1st Gordons at Ypres on 4 December 1914. William was killed ten days later at Wytschaete.
Born 1891 in Lockerbie, Dryfesdale, Dumfriesshire. Son of William and Margaret (Scott) Edgar of Raehill Sawmill and of Wiston Mains, Lamington, Lanarkshire.
Missing in Action on 14 December 1914 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Johnstone Parish War Memorial in Johnstonebridge.

GROSSART, ROBERT DYKES LIEUT. R.F.C.
Robert Dykes Grossart – age 25 – Lieutenant, Royal Flying Corps.
Robert was educated at Moffat Academy and at Glasgow University where from 1912 he studied engineering. He had a life long interest in aeroplanes and had constructed his own monoplane at his home in Beattock in 1910 when he was 18. He interrupted his studies to enlist as a Private in the Cameronians in August 1914. He was selected for officer training and was commissioned in the King's (Liverpool Regiment) in May 1915. He spent a year with 15th Reserve Battalion before he was transferred to the 18th Battalion of the Welsh Regt and went with them to France in June 1916. After three months at the front he was posted to Oxford to train as a pilot and then to Catterick Bridge in Yorkshire where he qualified in December 1916. Robert was based at Beverley in Yorkshire when his aircraft nose-dived into the ground and he was killed.
Born 1892 at Corriehill in Hutton and Corrie, Dumfriesshire. Son of Robert Fraser Grossart and Wilhelmina (Gibson) Grossart of Milton, Beattock.
Died on Active Service on 9 February 1917 and buried in Kirkpatrick Juxta Parish Churchyard, Beattock. (CWG)
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial, on the Moffat Academy memorial and on the Glasgow University Roll of Honour.


HASTIE, JOHN PTE. K.O.S.B.
John Hastie – age 26 – Lance Corporal (22794) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1892 in Moffat, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late George Smith Hastie and of Janet (Ainslie) Hastie of Chapel Brae, Moffat.
Missing in Action on 30 November 1917 and named on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, France.
Also named on the Moffat War Memorial.


INGLIS, CHARLES PTE. K.O.S.B.
Charles Inglis – age 20 – Lance Corporal (16783) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Charles was a ploughman at Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted in November 1914. He joined the 2nd KOSB in France in April 1915 but was wounded soon after he arrived and evacuated to hospital in England. He returned to France in December but was wounded again in July 1916. He was wounded for the third time in September at evacuated to hospital in Glasgow. Charles returned to France for the last time in January 1917. Born 1896 in Moffat, Dumfriesshire.
Son of John and Elizabeth (Johnstone) Inglis of Lockhouse Cottage, Kirkpatrick Juxta and of Bruntsheilds Cottage, Tinwald, Lochmaben.
Killed in Action on 7 August 1917 and buried in Hermies British Cemetery, France.

JOHNSTONE, WILLIAM PTE. K.O.S.B.
William Johnstone – age 27 – Private (24903) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a ploughman at Kirkbank, Johnstone, Dumfriesshire when he married in June 1916.
Born 1890 in Kirkpatrick Juxta. Son of the late Margaret (Hill) Johnstone and of David Johnstone of Kirkpatrick Juxta. Husband of Agnes (Seaton) Johnstone of Mossside Cottages, Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire who he married in 1916 in Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 3 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.


KELLY, JAMES SERGT. H.L.I.
James Kelly – age 26 – Private (10281) 1st Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
James had served with the HLI for eight years mostly in India. The battalion were at Ambala in August 1914 as part of the Sirhind Brigade in the 3rd (Lahore) Division. They moved to France via Egypt, landing at Marseilles on 1 December 1914.
Born c.1888 in Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire – but I cannot trace.
Son of Elizabeth Kelly (born 1868 in Buittle, Kirkcudbrightshire) who married George Johnstone in 1897 in Dalbeattie and who then married James Dalling in 1914 in Kirkpatrick Juxta. She was at Beerholm Dairy, Beattock in 1915.
The Army Registers of Soldiers effects gives him an alias of J. E. Kelly Johnstone.
Killed in Action on 19 December 1914 and buried in Guards Cemetery, Windy Corner, Cuinchy, France.
Also named on the Moffat War Memorial.


LOCKE, CHARLES TRPR. SCOTS GREYS.
Charles Locke – age 30 – Sergeant (24070) 9th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers.
Charles had worked for a grocer and wine merchant in Moffat but was a chauffeur at Oban when he enlisted at Kinlochleven in Argyllshire as Private (15131) in the Royal Scot Greys. He was posted to the Lancashire Fusiliers at Gallipoli in October 1915 and moved with them to Egypt and then to France in July 1916 where he was killed two months later.
Born 1885 in Kirkpatrick Juxta. Son of Martha Locke. Grandson of the late John and Jane (Dewar) Locke of Beattock. Husband of Margaret Frances (Nielson) Locke of 33 Smith Street, Kinning Park, Glasgow who he married in 1910 in Plantation, Glasgow.
Killed in Action on 17 September 1916 and buried in Serre Road Cemetery No.2, Somme, France.

William Locke – age 36 – Private (201836) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a master bootmaker in Beattock when he enlisted in early 1917. He served in Palestine before his battalion moved to France in April 1918. William died of pneumonia.
Born 1883 in Kirkpatrick Juxta. Son of the late John and Jane (Dewar) Locke of Beattock.
Died on Active Service on 3 November 1918 and buried in Kezelberg Military Cemetery, Belgium.

MARTIN, WILLIAM L-CORP. K.O.S.B.
William Martin – age 21 – Lance Corporal (4480) 3/5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
The 3/5th Battalion was formed in March 1915 in Dumfries as a depot/training unit and moved to Ripon in early 1916. William died in Ripon Military Hospital.
Born 1896 in Kirkpatrick Juxta. Son of William and Janet (Jackson) Martin, of Kinnelhead Farm, Beattock.
Died on Service on 27 March 1916 and buried in Ripon Cemetery, Yorkshire. (CWG)


ROBERTSON, DAVID PTE. K.O.S.B.
David Robertson – age 23 – Corporal (23850) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
David was a shepherd at Penlaw Farm, Corrie, Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted. He joined the 1st KOSB in France in early 1916 and had been wounded twice. He was posted to the 6th KOSB.
Born 1894 at Stockerton Farm, Kirkcudbright. Son of Robert and Bessie (Houston) Robertson of Middlegill Cottage, Moffat, of Craigielands Lodge, Beattock and latterly of Eglinton Mains, Irvine, Ayrshire.
Missing in Action on 24 March 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, France.
Also named on the Moffat War Memorial.
David appears to be named as David ROBSON on the Hutton & Corrie Parish War Memorial and on the Lockerbie War Memorial.

James Robertson – age 23 – Private (20225) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James joined his battalion at Gallipoli in September 1915.
Born 1892 at Stockerton Farm, Kirkcudbright. Son of Robert and Bessie (Houston) Robertson of Middlegill Cottage, Moffat, of Craiglelands Lodge, Beattock and latterly of Eglinton Mains, Irvine, Ayrshire.
Died of Wounds on 22 November 1915 and buried in Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Moffat War Memorial.

SHANKLAND, JAMES CORP. A.& S.H.
James Shankland, Military Medal – age 33 – Private (S/17268) 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
James was a shepherd at Woodfoot Farm, Beattock when he enlisted in August 1916. He joined the Argylls in France in December 1916 but due to illness was treated at the 1st Australian General Hospital and was evacuated home in January 1917. He returned to France in July 1917 and was posted to the 2nd Argylls in September. He was awarded a M.M. for his actions in November 1917.
Born 1885 in Moffat, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late Janet (Henderson) Shankland and of Thomas Shankland of Woodfoot Farm, Beattock.
Killed in Action on 17 April 1918 and buried in Meteren Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Moffat War Memorial.


SHELTON, JOHN THOMAS PTE. CAMERONS.
John Thomas Shelton – age 25 – Private (S/15907) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
John was a surfaceman with the Caledonian Railway Company and was living at Foggieholm, Moffat when he enlisted in December 1914. He joined the 2nd Camerons in France in April 1915 but was wounded a month later and treated in the 4th General Hospital before being evacuated home. He returned to France and was posted to the 1st Camerons on 29 September 1915 but was killed two weeks later.
Born 1890 in Nottingham. Son of the late Sarah Ann (Garner) Shelton of Cremorne Street, Nottingham and of Henry Shelton of 36 Gratton Road, Bedford.
In 1911 he was living with Adam and Jane Hume and he named their eldest daughter Miss Margaret Scaite Hume of Station Cottages, Beattock as his legatee and to receive his medals.
Missing in Action on 13 October 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Caledonian Railway Company memorial in Glasgow Central Station.


STEEL, ARCHIBALD PTE. K.O.S.B.
Archibald William Steel – age 23 – Private (33500) 2nd Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Archibald enlisted as Private (21945) in the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) but was posted to the HLI in France.
Born 1894 in Kirkpatrick Juxta. Son of Archibald and Annie (Grindle) Steel of Ottawa, Canada, formerly of Beattock where they married in 1893. In 1901 he was living with his grandfather, Archibald Steel, and his aunts Jean and Mary Janet Steel in Craigielands Village, Kirkpatrick Juxta and he named Mary Janet as his legatee.
His grandfather had for many years been a porter at Beattock Station and he was the sub-postmaster there before retiring to Edwardsrigg Farm, Beattock.
Killed in Action on 4 September 1917 and buried in Cambrin Military Cemetery, France.

TORRANCE, ROBERT PTE. CANADIAN HIGH'S.
Robert Torrance – age 28 – Private (1015474) 72nd Battalion, Canadian Infantry. (The Seaforth Highlanders of Canada)
Robert was a waiter and living in South Vancouver, British Columbia when he enlisted in May 1916. He had previously served with the Volunteer Battalion of the King's Own Scottish Borderers and with local militia in Toronto, Ontario, the 48th Highlanders of Canada. Robert died influenza and pneumonia in the Vancouver General Hospital
Born 1889 in Carstairs, Lanarkshire. Son of William and Marion (Frood) Torrance of Ivy Cottage, Beattock. In 1901 the family were at Beattock Station where William was a Permanent-way Inspector.
Husband of Sarah (Henderson) Torrance of 3417 Caroline Street, Vancouver and of 6 Beaumont Street, Cockton Hill, Bishop Auckland, County Durham who he married on 24 January 1917 in Vancouver.
Died on 13 December 1918 and buried in Vancouver (Mountain View) Cemetery, Canada.
[I'm still not sure if Robert served overseas. His service record is not yet available - and a big thank you to Anne Anderson for finding Canadian records for him]


WATSON, JAMES PTE. K.O.S.B.
James Watson – age 21 – Private (23638) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a farm hand at Chapel Farm, Moffat when he enlisted. He was posted to the 7th/8th KOSB before being transferred to the 1st Battalion. He was killed during a German air raid on the transport line.
Born 1897 in Moffat, Dumfriesshire. Son of Thomas and Marion (Orr) Watson of Chapel Cottage, Moffat.
Killed in Action on 12 May 1918 and buried in Cinq Rues British Cemetery, Hazebrouck, France.
Also named on the Moffat War Memorial.


WAUGH, ADAM PTE. SCOTS GUARDS.
Adam Waugh – age 30 – Private (15721) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.
Adam was in business as a carting contractor in the Beattock area.
Born 1887 in Beattock, Kirkpatrick Juxta. Son of the late Adam Waugh and of Margaret (Wallace) Waugh of Marchhouse, Beattock and of Eastgate, Moffat, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 25 May 1918 and buried in St. Amand British Cemetery, France.


YOUNGER, JOHN MALCOLM CAPT. COLDSTREAM GUARDS.
John Malcolm Younger – age 29 – Captain, Coldstream Guards.
John was educated at Eton College and was commissioned in August 1909. He was promoted to Captain in September 1915. He had been wounded in 1914 and was badly wounded in September 1916. John was drowned in a boating accident on the Thames near Maidenhead, Berkshire.
Born 1889 in Chelsea, London. Son of Sir William Younger and of Lady Helen Caroline Benyon (Gunter) Younger of Auchen Castle, Kirkpatrick Juxta.
Died on Service on 31 August 1918 and buried in Kirkpatrick Juxta Parish Churchyard. (CWG)

WWII

ALSTON, JAMES B. SERG. A.&S.H

James Brown Alston – age 27 – Sergeant (2984051) 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
James was a gardener at Brodick Castle, Isle of Arran and a Lance Corporal in the 11th Argylls when he married in February 1940. He joined the 2nd Argylls in Malaya and became a prisoner of war after the fall of Singapore in February 1942. James was drowned when the Japanese cargo ship, Kachidoki Maru, used for carrying prisoners and troops to Japan, was torpedoed and sunk by the American submarine USS Pampanito.
Born 1916 in Terregles, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of the late Elizabeth (Dirom) Alston and of John Alston (a forester) of Auchen Castle, Kirkpatrick Juxta. Husband of Robina Agnes (Sproat) Alston, of Brodick Castle, Arran and of Dunjop, Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire who he married in 1940 in Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire.
Died on Service/Lost at Sea on 12 September 1944 and named on the Singapore Memorial, Singapore.
The 2nd Battalion of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlander, who were in Malaya when war broke out, fought the Japanese down the length of Malaya and held the Causeway into Singapore until the surrender when they became Prisoners of War of the Japanese.


ARMSTRONG-MACDONNELL, L.W. LIEUT. COL, IRISH GUARDS.
Lucius William Armstrong-Macdonnell – age 35 – Lieutenant Colonel (51929) Irish Guards attached to the Combined Operations Headquarters.
Lucius had been a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy before he gained a commission in the Army in January 1932. He was promoted to Captain in September 1937 and joined the Irish Guards in September 1939. He was killed while a passenger in a Liberator (AL587) which was shot down in the Bay of Biscay enroute to Gibraltar.
Born 1907 in Gopeng, Perak, Federation of Malaya States. Son of William Henry and Mabel Sedgwick (Gurney-Whitchurch) Armstrong-MacDonnell of Broomlands, Beattock. Husband of Valerie Muir (Wilson) Armstrong-MacDonnell of Castle Hill, Ayr who he married in 1938 in Alloway, Ayrshire.
Died on Active Service/Lost at Sea on 23 March 1943 and named on the Brookwood Memorial, Surrey.

GRAY, GEORGINA S. PTE. A.T.S.
Georgina Smith Gray – age 29 – Private (W/55321) Auxiliary Territorial Service.
Georgina died of tuberculosis in the Dumfries and Galloway Sanatorium in Lochmaben.
Born 1916 in Kirkpatrick Juxta. Daughter of George and Margaret Roddick (Hogg) Gray of Corrie Syke, Beattock.
Died on Service on 22 February 1946 and buried in Kirkpatrick Juxta Parish Churchyard. (CWG)


JOHNSTONE, WALTER TELEGRAPHIST ROYAL NAVY.
Walter Millar Johnstone – age 19 – Telegraphist (C/JX 308719) H.M.S. Blean, Royal Navy.
Born 1923 in Kirkpatrick Juxta. Son of William John and Isabella (Millar) Johnstone of Beattock.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 11 December 1942 and named on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent.
The Escort-Destroyer “Blean” was torpedoed and sunk by the German Submarine U-443 off the Algerian coast near Oran while escorting a UK bound convoy.


LOWTHER, MICHAEL B. GNR. ROYAL ARTILLERY F.R. (L.Y.) R.A.
Michael Brough Lowther – age 28 – Gunner (322016) 155 (The Lanarkshire Yeomanry) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery.
The regiment sailed from the Clyde for India in March 1941. They moved to Malaya in October and fought the Japanese down the length of the country until the surrender of Singapore in February 1942. Michael was amongst 250 prisoners of war transported on the Japanese cargo ship “England Maru” in 1942 to Formosa (Tiawan) to work in the Kinaseki Copper Mine. He died there and was buried in Rinrakutomon Cemetery but was re-interred at Sai Wan in July 1947.
Born 1915 in Ayr. Son of the late John Lowther and of Sarah Ann (Stewart) Lowther of March House, Beattock.
Died on Service on 8 December 1944 and buried in Sai Wan War Cemetery, Hong Kong, China.


TOCHRANE, JOHN PTE. K.O.S.B.
John Tochrane – age 28 – Private (3194176) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a grocer in the High Street, Langholm, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted, together with his brother Tom, in April 1940. They went to India in May 1942. The 2nd KOSB sailed with the 7th (Indian) Division to Burma in September 1943. They crossed into the Arakan, the coastal province of Burma and in February 1944 took part in the critical actions at Ngakydauk Pass and in the so called ‘Admin Box’. John was orginally buried in the battlefield cemetery at Akyab but was re-interred in May 1952.
Born 1915 in Middlebie, Dumfriesshire. Son of David Ward Tochrane and of Jeannie (Bell) Tochrane of Moffat.
Killed in Action on 17 February 1944 and buried in Taukkyan War Cemetery, Myanmar. (Burma)
Also named on the Langholm War Memorial and on the Parish Church memorial in Langholm.



TURNER, JAMES PTE. K.O.S.B.
James Turner – age 29 – Lance Corporal (3188002) 5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1915 in Kirkbean, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of John Robert and Christian Turner of Barnhill, Beattock. Husband of Janet Kirkpatrick (Grey or Douglas) Turner of Bells Cottage, Taylorland, Gasstown, Dumfries who he married in 1943 in Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 5 January 1945 and buried in Brunssum War Cemetery, Netherlands.
In October 1944 the 5th KOSB were sent to Belgium as part of the 52nd (Lowland) Division to join the 21st Army Group . They were attached to First Canadian Army and fought in the Battle of the Scheldt until early November. They then fought through into Germany.
