Clydebank - Clydebank District
The Clydebank war memorial takes the form of a Clock Tower with a carillion of bells in the tower of the Town Hall on Dumbarton Road.
There is a shrine with sculpture at the base. The inscription reads:
THE
GLORIOUS
DEAD
1914 - 1918
THIS SHRINE
WITH THE
CLOCK AND CHIMES
DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF THE
MEN OF CLYDEBANK
WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE

The memorial was dedicated on Sunday 8th June 1931 and the memorial unveiled by Sir Iain Colquhoun. The Press, Friday June 12th 1931, reported that Colquhoun criticised recent war books which have been published focusing on the horrors and pointlesness of the Western Front and as part of his speech he related the following anecdote:
One day his company had been ordered to advance half-a-mile towards the enemy lines. They had done so in small groups, and after the group in which he had been had gone some distance they had come upon what appeared to be a small crater. Peal after peal of laughter had come out of the crater, and looking into it the members of his (Sir Iain's) group had seen five of their regiment standing up to the knees in mud. He (Sir Iain) had asked if the men were mad or suffering from shell shock. The reply had been - "No, it is only MacDonald giving us 'a turn'." "Well", Sir Iain proceeded, "when you realise there was a MacDonald in every company-yes, in every platoon of the British Army-to give a turn when things were bad, you will realise the intense pride of a regimental officer in commanding such men."

On 8th Nov 09. They are going to unveil the new Clydebank War Memorial. I have been waiting a long time for this!!

My great grandfather and his four brothers will be named on there.

All were killed in the Great War.

As part of ‘Singer, Sirens and Silent Heroes’, a project which aims to provide a lasting legacy of experiences of people of the area during the Second World War, West Dunbartonshire Council Culture Section will present two exhibitions, which commemorate its pivotal involvement in the War. World War II Exhibition, Clydebank Museum, August 15 – November 7 2009 and Silent Heroes a photographic exhibition at Backdoor Gallery from August 22– September 26 2009

"Intimation has been received by Mr Thomas Johnstone, 157 Radnor Street, Radnor Park, Clydebank, that his second son, Private David Johnstone, 1/9th Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders (T.F.), has succumbed to wounds received on April 5. Private D. Johnstone, who was only 18 years of age, joined the Territorials in May Last, and prior to mobilisation was employed as an apprentice pattern maker in the Singer Factory, Clydebank. A tragic circumstance is that this is the second son Mr & Mrs Johnstone have lost within a fortnight, the eldest, Lance-Corporal Wm. Johnstone, having died on April 5 as the result of wounds from the same shell which injured his younger brother."
