Just to add . . . .

The following is quoted from The Denny & Dunipace Roll of Honour and refers to the War Memorial in the Cemetery.

"The Monument is the work of G. H. Paulin, A.R.S.A., Glasgow. The pedestal is of grey granite and the bronze figure of Victory or Peace has been adopted from the Burgh Seal. The site of the Monument, a knoll to the east of Denny Cemetery, is the gift of Charles William Forbes Esq., of Callendar".

(The panels from this Memorial and the Town Centre Memorial are identical.)

Hi Mark,

The answer to your question about listings - yes, but I haven't got round to posting them yet.

Pte. G. Dow isn't on either of the Denny War Memorials (or any of the other local ones either). It's maybe because he wasn't considered 'a Denny man' as Kirk o'Muir is actually about 5/6 miles outside Denny on the Fintry Road. The 'village' consists of about half a dozen houses (I think mostly belonging to the Forrestry Commission) at the side of Carron Valley Reservoir and a really old Burial Ground. I have Memorial Inscriptions for all the existing/legible stones but there's none bearing the name Dow.

He's not on the Denny & Dunipace Roll of Honour either.

Is he an ancestor?

Hello Anne,

Not he is not an ancestor.

I'm just trying to track casualties with links to 'my area' who may be commemorated elsewhere also.

regards,
Mark

Are the panels the same on the town and cemetery memorials, they look very similar?

The ones in town are in a modern location but are old panels.

I couldn't quite make out the UKNIWM entries for Denny and Denny and Dunipace before. I will have another look after seeing these memorials.

Hi Adam,

Yes, they're exactly the same.

The memorial in the town (I believe) is going to be moved once the town centre has had it's had it's make-over - dear knows when that's going to be though!

I sent photos to the UKNIWM a wee while ago, the references are:
Town - 5775, Cemetery - 5774.

Anne,
I have the Denny Roll of Honour on my database, I can paste it on if you like? Otherwise I'll leave it to you.

Thanks for the offer Jim, I've got a copy too.

Unfortunately, the Memorials and the Roll of Honour don't quite 'match-up', so I was only going to post the names as they appear on both the memorials.

Some of the men mentioned on the Memorials are buried in Denny Cemetery but at the same time, there's just as many buried in other local cemeteries (Camelon, Larbert Churchyard & Larbert Cemetery). Then of course there's the ones who came from Banknock, Haggs, Longcroft, Dennyloanhead, Bonnybridge etc., etc., some listed, some not. Then there's the Church Memorials .......

Then to top that up, there's all the family stones bearing the names of men although not buried locally, it's still a memorial to them - and they're all over the place!!

I've had many an hour of fun and games trying to cross reference them!

I've looked out the transcriptions for the various War Memorials I've photographed but I haven't a clue how to add attachments to this board. (The last pictures, SKS did them for me!)

As both Denny Town and Denny Cemetery Memorials have identical plaques, I've posted the ones from the Town as they are a bit clearer than the Cemetery ones.

Sculpture was by George Henry Paulin who seemed to have a preference for kneeling figures, executing other similar statues for Milngavie and Dollar Academy.
