The Scotsman, 27th April 1920

BERWICK - Special dedication services were held at Hutton and Paxton parishes, Berwick, when three war memorials were unveiled by the Very Rev Jas Cooper DD, Professor of Church History, Glasgow University. In the old church at Hutton an oak chancel set, pulpit and lectern was dedicated to the memory of the late Colonel David Milne Home, laird of Billie and Paxton, who died while holding the command of the RGA at Leith Fort in 1918. In the churchyard at Hutton a Celtic cross, bearing the names of those who had fallen in the war, was unveiled; and at a service held later at Paxton a similar cross was unveiled by Dr Cooper.

In the parish of Hutton there are 2 war memorials of near identical design with this one outside Hutton Parish Church and the other on the south side of Paxton village. Each has 9 names from the First World War: but though the Paxton memorial adds 5 names from the Second World War - Hutton's has none. This has always seemed statistically rather unlikely and flicking through local pamphlet history "Parish of Hutton, Paxton & Fishwick" (local contributors, published in late 1980s) that appears to be borne out by this:

Quote:

p14
Hutton Mains was part of the 'Broadmeadows Estate' until 1918 when it was sold, with the tenant farmer Mr Hosick still in residence. In 1921 the farm was bought by Mr Arthur Bell and was farmed by his son. Meantime, Mr Bell had procured for his son Tom the farm of Broadsmeadows which is today run by his daughter and son-in-law Mrs Sheila and Mr Pat Roddam. The third son, Arthur, attended to the butcher's business in North Shields which was supplied with sheep and cattle from the farm.

On the outbreak of the Second World War, Arthur joined the Air Force but was killed in action.
Maurice also joined up and went off to the army. So Mr Bell had to come out of retirement.

Arthur Bell's CWGC entry:
Quote:

BELL, ARTHUR
Rank:Sergeant
Trade:Pilot/Obs.
Service No:1078557
Date of Death:04/08/1941
Regiment/Service:Royal Air Force
Grave ReferenceEast border.
CemeteryHUTTON NEW BURIAL GROUND
Additional Information:
Son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Bell, of Hutton Mains.

He does not seem to have an entry on the Scottish National War Memorial site.

Quite strange for one parish cross to have WWII added but the other not...

I bumped into the Session Clerk at Hutton recently, and she didn't believe there were any memorials inside the church relating to war dead or infact even fitting the war years for dates. I suppose it's possible that given he's buried locally they didn't add him to their cross - but it still seems unusual.

Added to this, as you can see, his CWGC entry says he's buried in Hutton. But he has an entry on Coldstream History Society's website... and it says he died over Germany, on 15th August not 4th, is buried in Beckelingen, and possibly was a Flying Officer:
http://www.coldstreamhistorysociety.co.uk/index.php/war-memorials/profile/hutton-arthur-bell

So overall this is rather confusing; both his memorialisation and his burial place.

It'd seem Coldstream History Society somehow confused him with:
