Not listed on UKNIWM

Location - previously in Glenzier school (now closed), current location not known

I have this from two different sources that there was a memorial in Glenzier school (now closed) and that this was for a single individual. Circumstantially I think it was probably for John Jarvie who was killed on 17th April 1917 and who was formerly the schoolmaster at Glenzier school. One source has told me that when the school closed, the memorial was given to a member of his family who lives nearby.

John Jarvie is listed on the Canonbie war memorial.

I am currently making enquiries locally to find the location of the memorial and get a photo that we can put on the website.

Plaque for war hero returned to his family

Published at 21:48, Wednesday, 30 September 2009

A PLAQUE put up in Glenzier primary school in memory of a former headmaster killed in World War One has been returned to his family.

Ken Halliday presents the John Jarvie memorial tablet to his daughter-in-law Margaret Jarvie and granddaughter Margaret Hearne

John Jarvie was appointed headmaster at Glenzier in September 1913 and lived in the schoolhouse where his son, Archibald, was born in 1914.

In January 1915 Mr Jarvie, like so many of his contemporaries, responded to the appeal to join up and enlisted in the KOSB, progressing through the ranks to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.

Tragically, Lt Jarvie died on April 17, 1917 from wounds received during the Arras offensive.

The school board gave permission for a memorial tablet to be placed in the school hall in Lt Jarvie’s memory and this was unveiled in September 1917 by J H Milne Home, chairman of the school board.

The tablet remained in place until the final closure of Glenzier school at the end of the last summer term.

During the 1990s Ken Halliday, then headteacher of the school, was in contact with Lt Jarvie’s son, Archie, who was letters editor of the Glasgow Herald until his eventual retiral at the age of 83.

Ken promised to keep the family informed of the condition and whereabouts of the tablet in the event of any change in the circumstances of the school.

Archie Jarvie sadly died in 2007 but Ken contacted his widow, Margaret, informing her that there would be no objection to the family being given the tablet.
She was delighted to accept and last Friday she visited Glenzier, together with her daughter, Margaret, to be presented with the tablet.

Historical background here:
http://www.newcumnock-parishchurch.org.uk/ncwm%20website/Bank%20School%20Memorial.htm

John Jarvie was a member of the teaching staff at the school and in all probability, the Mrs Jarvie in the photograph is his widow. The CWGC gives the following information
Jarvie, Second Lieutenant, John, 7th/8th Bn KOSB. Died of wounds received at Arras 17th April 1917. Remembered at St Pol Communal Cemetery Extension.
Age 30, husband of Jessie F Gillespie Jarvie of Ingleston, New Cumnock
He left Bank School to take up a post at Glenzier, Canonbie, Dumfries.
This is from the Kilsyth Chronicle of April 1917 and submitted by Jim Jarvie, Cumbernauld
“Telegraphic information is to hand that 2nd Lieutenant John Jarvie, KOSB, died of wounds at No 12 Stationary Hospital, France on the 17th April. The eldest son of Mr Alex Jarvie, Craigmarloch. Lieutenant Jarvie was school master at Glenzier, Canonbie, when he joined the Royal Scots in March 1915. He rose to the rank of Sargeant and then received a commission 11December last. He entered the Scholastic profession as a pupil teacher in Kilsyth Academy; subsequently he had an appointment in the New Cumnock district.
In the big push he had been seriously wounded in the neck, chest and Knee and the first information was to the effect that he had to undergo a very serious operation. Thirty years of age he leaves a widow and one child. Two brothers are serving in France.”

Thanks Ken, I knew of Jarvie's connection to Bank school but lacked the proof that he was the man commemorated at Glenzier (which is pronounced Glinger by the way).

It would be great if we had a better photo of the plaque and quite nice to know of its current location.

This is now WMR, ex UKNIWM, memorial 71916.

The links in previous posts to both the Eskdale & Liddesdale Advertiser and the New Cumnock Parish Church websites unfortunately both now seem to be broken.
