Yes Please Kevin!

I find a lot on unidentified graves whilst photographing for BWMP throughout Stirlingshire and to have this information to do cross checks would be wonderful.

Strangely enough, I was at this memorial today........

For info on Cowie I received the following from Willie Stevenson.

Hi, Malcolm nice to hear from you, I have been having a lot of trouble with my internet connection, it appears to be an internal fault within the house, a faulty cable I think. I am accessing my e-mails at my son's house on his computer. In answer to your VAT question, great news, thanks to you we have just been refunded the VAT the cheque came through last week. As I am having problems with my internet connection please feel free to report on the Cowie memorial on the new site, I will get into it when I get the problem fixed. Can you pass on my regards to Kevin and thank you once again for all your help. I will get back in touch as soon as I can. Willie.

So there you are, Willie will join us as soon as he gets his PC sorted.
Aye
Malcolm

Donald was also commemorated at Stanley, Perthshire but his name was wrongly put on the memorial as 'Daniel' Archibald.

His brother, James, also fell - commemorated at Auchterarder and Stanley also.

People's Journal 24.03.1917
Aberuthven
Information has been received from the War Office that Private Donald Archibald A and SH is at present in hospital suffering from an injury to his foot.
A brother Private James Archibald, Black Watch, has been missing since 30th July last and his parents would be grateful to any soldier who would let them know anything as to his fate.

regards,
Mark

Hi Mark, thanks for that further information, it is good when more information comes through about the men on our memorial, as you can see he was remembered on the Cowie War Memorial as his parents lived in Cowie. Willie.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cowie to honour pilot's sacrifice”. I am sorry to have to point out fact from fiction regarding this article. In all my research regarding the fallen heroes from Cowie, I have found no record of P.O. Carlyle Gray Everiss RNZAF. Sacrificing his life while saving the village of Cowie. The only record I have found states that, Pilot Officer Everiss lost his life when he lost control of the aircraft he was flying, in a tail chase training exercise. The aircraft did not crash at Cowie Bowling Club, as reported in the newspapers but outside the village to the East of Cowie. Although this was an interesting story, we have to distinguish historical fact from myth, had he in fact flown his aircraft away from the village before he crashed there would have been some sort of official recognition of this, in truth there is none. The truth is he was not in control of the aircraft or of where it would come down when he crashed.

This was just a tragic accident which has grown into a myth.

This in no way detracts from the fact that this young airman came from New Zealand and lost his life at Cowie while training to defend this country in its darkest hour.

P.O. Everiss is remembered with honour on Cowie’s War Memorial alongside the other 74 men from Cowie who made the supreme sacrifice in the two world wars. It should be pointed out on behalf of the families from Cowie who lost loved ones in the two world wars, that no single sacrifice, was greater than that made by each and everyone of the men Remembered with Honour on Cowie’s War Memorial.

I am the nephew of Andrew Chalmers (South Staffordshire Regiment - Killed in Action at Arnhem). I spent a lot of my childhood in Cowie and am delighted to see a Memorial erected to the soldiers who have been killed in the two World Wars. Most of Andrew's family (including my Mother) did not have the opportunity to view a War Memorial in Cowie nor did they visit Oosterbeek where Andrew is buried with the exception of my two spinster aunts, Catherine and Isabel (now both dead) who were taken there by my sister. I have been fortunate to visit it twice with my family.

Well done to your endeavours. I will visit the site myself now that I know it exists.

Thank you for sharing this information Sandy. If you have a photograph of the man or any other information, please post it here as it all helps to commemorate the man.
