UKNIWM 44829

The UKNIWM description of this memorial is poor in parts and inaccurate in others. I will write to them (with photos) in order to correct their information.

My own photos of the name panels which may be a little clearer.

From The Scotsman, Monday 26th March 1923.

    COLINTON

GENERAL SIR FRANCIS DAVIES ON CITIZENS DUTY

In presence of about 2000 people, the Colinton parish war memorial was unveiled yesterday afternoon by General Sir Francis J. Davies, General Officer-Commanding-in-Chief, Scottish Command. Lieut.-Colonel J. M. Trotter of Colinton, who presided, recalled the early days of war, when Lord Roseberry appealed to men of the Water of Leith Valley for recruits. That appeal was nobly responded to by men and women from Colinton parish.

General Davies, after unveiling the memorial, referred to the notable occasion in which they were taking part. Their duty did not end there. He wanted it to be the beginning of a long act of reverance to the men and women who fell, and as they passed the memorial he hoped they would think for a moment of the great sacrifice made by those who fell, and that they would bring their children and show them the memorial, and tell them what it meant.

The scripture lesson was read by the Very Rev. Dean Reid, and a prayer of thanksgiving and remembrance was offered by the Rev. N. C. Macfarlane. The dedication was performed by the Rev. Thomas Marjoribanks. A laurel leaf having been placed on the monument by the Rev. Canon Forsyth, the "Last Post" and "Reveille" were sounded. The band of the H.L.I. and the members of the combined choirs of the parish led the service of praise. A detachent of the King's Dragoon Guards was present, in addition to ex-service men, members of the V.A.D., Girl Guides and members of the Boys' Brigade.

The memorial, which is erected in the centre of the extended portion of the parish churchyard, takes the form of a cenotaph, and records the names of 134 men and women who made the supreme sacrifice. The whole work was designed by Mr G. Washington Browne, R.S.A., Edinburgh.

WW1
William M. Black

Also listed on the Colinton church Roll of Honour

(Glasgow Herald 23rd April 1915)
"Intimation has been received by his parents, who reside in Colinton, Mid-Lothian, of the death in action last Saturday of Sergeant W.M. Black, C Company 9th Royal Scots. Sergeant Black was employed in the office of the City Chamberlain, Edinburgh, and was well known in athletic circles. His father, Colour-Sergeant Black, is acting as drill instructor of troops in this country, while his brother is in the Navy. His mother has received a letter from Colonel Blair, commanding the 9th Royal Scots, conveying the sad intelligence, and telling her that her son was in the trenches when a bullet found him, killing him instantaneously, and that he was buried at midnight in a cemetery for British soldiers, where three other members of the 9th rest."

As he is remembered on a memorial, his grave site was likely later destroyed by fighting or simply lost.
