This is an original First World War battlefield cross. Once they were replaced with Imperial War Graves Commission headstones the family of the dead were offered the original cross. They are sometimes found in churches after being donated by the family.
There are three Cowans listed on the Penicuik War Memorial - two of them Captains
COWAN , C J A , Captain , Royal Scots
COWAN , J O C , Captain , Royal Scots
COWAN , R C , 2nd Lieutenant , Royal Scots
The bottom two are brothers so is this to the other man - Captain C J A Cowan?
It's not possible to see from this photograph what the name is.
Thanks

There are no initials on the tags, but I wonder if this closeup showing the date of death and regiment will help.

Thanks NB. In which case it is the cross for
COWAN, CHARLES JOHN ALEXANDER
Initials: C J A
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Captain
Regiment/Service: Royal Scots
Unit Text: 3rd Bn.
Age: 25
Date of Death: 25/03/1918
Additional information: Son of Alexander and Alice Buchanan Cowan (nee Comrie Thomson), of Valleyfield, Penicuik, Midlothian. Born in Scotland.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: II. C. 3.
Cemetery: CERISY-GAILLY MILITARY CEMETERY
It is interesting that the original IWGC cross shows the 12th Bn which he would have been serving in when he died, but the CWGC entry shows 3rd Bn which was a home service battalion only, which he would have been attached to for administrative purposes.
