This is not listed on UKNIWM and is different from the listed memorial 44437 (which is inside the church).
Grid Ref NX 69692 69936

This memorial is outside Parton church at the side of Loch Ken.

I am still trying to find information on T. Gracie 5th KOSB - he's not included in my battalion records and there is no match on CWGC or SNWM. It's interesting that his unit inscription is a different style to the others.

I think I would tend to ignore the regiment (for T Gracie), both because of the type of font and also because the church memorial http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=1811 has no regiment for him. Added to the fact that there is no first name either, I think this means that there were no relatives living in the area when the memorial came to be erected. That may mean that he worked in the area prior to the war but actually came from somewhere else and is also commemorated on their memorial (Dumfries, Dalbeattie and Kirkcolm come to mind).
I don't think there are any Gracie gravestones in Parton churchyard either.

Thank you very much. That saves me going off on a wild goose chase. Strange that Parton is listed as residence of next-of-kin yet, in addition to the wrong unit info on the memorial, there is no mention of his death in the local press and no details were returned for the county roll of honour (highly unusual for a casualty).

One of the men listed here is Corporal A S Watson 6th Scottish Horse.

There were only three regiments of Scottish Horse so I was wondering does anyone know why his listing would have 6th Scottish Horse?

A S Watson has an individual memorial in Parton church http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=1780&highlight= where is unit is stated as 3rd Scottish Horse which I would presume would be correct. However the church memorial at Parton also shows him as 6th Bn.

Thanks for identifying him. Just to complicate mattters he died serving in the 10th Camerons which was formed from the Lovat Scouts and some men from the Scottish Horse.

Regarding Adam Watson's service with the Scottish Horse.
SNWM has him as formerly 611 SH (is this where 6TH came from?) whereas his MIC has 6728 SH.
The Stewartry RoH says that he served at Dardanelles and Salonica.
The 1/3rd Bn Scottish Horse fought with the 1/1st Bn as dismounted troops at Gallipoli. In October 1916 the 1/3rd went to the MGC while one company went to the Lovat Scouts who were forming the 10th Bn Cameron Highlanders.
Adam was killed while serving with the 10th Camerons in Salonika.

Interesting theory about 611 being mistaken for 6th. It's hard to come up with another reason why he should be listed as 6th since he was in the 1/3rd or 3rd Scottish Horse or the 10th Camerons. No unit with 6th in it.

All of the men detailed below are also listed on a memorial inside Parton Parish Church and are on a Roll of Honour in Parton Village Hall.
These memorials cover the area of Parton Parish which is adjacent to Loch Ken.
Men from the eastern part of the Parish appear on the War Memorial in Corsock Village.

L-CPL. GEO. ALEXANDER, 6th G.HRS
George Alexander, Lance Corporal (S/11786) 6th/7th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. Age 21.
George was a farm labourer when he enlisted in November 1915. He was posted to the 2nd and then the 1/6th Battalions of the Gordons. George was killed at Cambrai.
Born 1896 in Monifieth, Forfarshire (Angus) Son of George (gamekeeper) and Catherine (Bruce) Alexander of Tintum, Parton and of Aberdona Cottage, Coalsnaughton, Clackmannan and later of Largo, Fife.
Missing in action on 23 March 1918 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Coalsnaughton War Memorial, Clackmannanshire.

CPL. BOYD, CANADIAN INF.
Peter Boyd, Corporal (434182) 5th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Saskatchewan Regiment) Age 37.
Peter was farming when he enlisted in January 1915 at Calgary, Alberta. He arrived in England in June and was posted to the 5th Battalion in France in September 1915. He was promoted to Corporal in December 1916. Peter was killed at Vimy Ridge.
Born 1879 in Old Luce, Wigtownshire. Son of Samuel and Margaret (Loch) Boyd of Overlaggan, Parton. Husband of Elizabeth McVitie (Wright) Boyd of Snuffhill Cottage, Irongray, of Drumsleet Cottage, Troqueer and of 69 Shakespeare Street Dumfries, who he had married in 1905 in Buittle, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Killed in action on 9 April 1917 and buried in Nine Elms Military Cemetery, Thelus, France.

CO. SERGT. M. CLANACHAN, 6th AUS.INF.
Note: All records have his name as CLANAHAN.
Matthew Clanahan, Company Sergeant Major (915) 6th Battalion, Australian Infantry. Age 32.
Matthew was educated at Borgue Academy before joining the army. He had 8 years service with Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, including 4 years in India and a year in South Africa. By 1910, when he married, he was a chauffeur with Sir Arthur J. Henniker-Hughan at Airds, Parton.
He emigrated to Australia in 1914 and, at the outbreak of war, enlisted in Melbourne, Victoria in August 1914. He sailed from Melbourne in October 1914 and landed at Gallipoli in April but due to illness was evacuated to hospital in Malta. He re-joined his battalion in July, was promoted to Sergeant in July 1915 and to CSM on 4 August 1915. He was shot in the head on 26 August and was treated at the Casualty Clearing Station at ANZAC beach before being evacuated to No.15 General Hospital in Alexandria where he died.
Born 1884 in Sypland, Kirkcudbright. Son of James and Jessie (Blane) Clanahan of Parton. Husband of Mary (Solley) Clanahan of Carlingwark Street, Castle Douglas who he married in 1910 in Dumfries.
Died of wounds on 6 September 1915 and buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.

GNR. A.B. DAVIDSON, R.G.A.

Alexander David Black Davidson, Gunner (337416) 123rd Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Age 40.
In 1911 Alexander was working as a draper and was living at 30 Cooper Street in Sunderland. He was still in Sunderland when he enlisted.
Born 1877 in Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Alexander and Agnes (Muirhead) Davidson. In 1911 Agnes and her two sons were living in Parton. Husband of Lillie Elizabeth (Lawrence) Davidson of 6 St. Leonards Street, Sunderland who he married in 1912 in Sunderland.
Killed in action on 3 December 1917 and buried in the Level Crossing Cemetery, Fampoux, France.
Also named in the Sunderland Book of Remembrance 1914-1918.

PTE. T. GRACIE, 5th K.O.S.B.

Thomas Jardine Gracie, Private (32293) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. Age 30.
Thomas was a cattle-man at Cogarth Farm, Parton (where he lived with his wife and five children) when he enlisted in June 1916. He was mobilised in January 1917 and posted to France in August 1917.
Born 1887 in Dumfries. Son of John and Jane (Twentyman) Gracie. Husband of Mary (Little) Gracie who he married in 1907 in Dumfries.
His daughter Margaret, aged 5, died in Dumfries Infirmary on 4 May 1918 while the family were at College Street, Maxwelltown. Her father is described as a ploughman and Pte. R.S. Fusiliers.
By 1919 Mary and her family were at East Park Cottages, Caerlaverock, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in action on 28 March 1918 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Maxwelltown/Troqueer War Memorial in Dumfries.

James Murray Hannah, Lance Corporal (S/11551) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. Age 33.
James was a shepherd at Mitchellslacks, Closeburn, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted in February 1916. He was posted to 8/10th Battalion in France in July 1916 and transferred to 1st Battalion. He was a member of the Lewis Gun Section when he was shot by a sniper near Monchy-le-Preux.
Born 1884 at Borland in Girthon Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Peter and Jane (McLellan) Hannah of Parton. Husband of Jeannie McKeand (Miller) Hannah of Gatelawbridge, Thornhill, Dumfriesshire who he married in 1905 in Mochrum Parish, Wigtownshire.
Missing in action on 16 June 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial.
Also named on an individual memorial in Parton Parish Church, on the Closeburn Parish War Memorial and on the Morton Parish War Memorial in Thornhill.

PTE. W. HUNTER, 5th K.O.S.B.
Walter Hunter, Private (2964) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 20.
Walter was a shepherd at Nunland, Lochrutton, Kirkcudbrightshire when he enlisted in January 1915. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915.
Born 1895 in Twynholm, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of John and Agnes (Stuart or Stewart) Hunter of Drumrash, Parton.
Killed in action on 12 September 1915 and buried in Redoubt Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.
