The memorial is on the main drag on the left as you enter the village - I'll try to check an OS map when I get a moment.

I looked up Smn Alexander Sutherland RNRT on CWGC and it gives this entry:

Name: SUTHERLAND, ALEXANDER MAIN

Regiment/Service: Royal Naval Reserve
Unit Text: H.M. Drifter "Great Heart."
Date of Death: 24/09/1915

Additional information: Son of Ellen Main Sutherland, of 114, High St., Ardersier, Inverness-shire, and the late James Sutherland.

Adam,

I don't suppose that you have any idea what the Royal Naval Reserve Trawler Section did?

Roxy

I only found out about them yesterday but it looks like the RNR Trawler Section was the forerunner of the Royal Naval Patrol Service of the Second World War. The RNRT existed bewteen 1907 and 1921.

Fishermen who were in the RNR would crew their own trawlers as auxiliary Navy vessels. These would then help protect the fishing fleet and carry out minesweeping and anti-U-boat duties.

I'll see if I can find some good links to other web pages about this service.

Regards

Adam
