Monkton - Kyle & Carrick District
The Monkton war memorial is a slender and very simple grey granit pillar with a simple square step at the base, a capital and a wreath carved in relief in the upper face. There is also a Memorial Hall in the village.

Not listed on UKNIWM

Located at a road junction in Monkton at OS Map Ref NS 358 277

I visited this memorial today. Both the memorial and surroundings are now looking significantly better than in the previously posted pics. Monkton is right alongside Prestwick Airport. Prestwick and Monkton is the present day parish.

There is now an unusual bench behind the memorial to the members of Monkton and Prestwick branch of the British Legion.

The People's Journal, Saturday, 15th. September, 1917.
"Dundee Casualties.
Lieut. J. Ross Devine, M.C., Royal Scots, (killed).- The deceased officer joined up the first week of the war, and served five months as a private in the Scottish Horse. He was granted a commission in the Royal Scots, with which regiment he had seen much active service. He was stationed at Dundee for a short period in the early part of last year. Lieut. Devine, who was 25 years of age, belonged to Ayrshire, but had been out in Egypt for some years.
He was awarded the Military Cross early in the year, and was also mentioned in Sir Douglas Haig's despatches. A Captain of the Headquarter's staff, to which Lieut. Devine was attached as a bombing officer, in a letter to his friends in Dundee says:- "It has been a very great loss to us that Ross Devine should have been killed. He died fighting gallantly, four dead Germans being found round him. He was a gallant soldier and popular with all of us, who appreciated his great worth and sterling qualities to the full."

John Ross Devine's connection with Ayrshire is through his mother, Margaret Baxter, and her family.
John was born at Logan's Cottage, Parish of Dalziel (now Motherwell), Lanarkshire, in February, 1892. His middle name comes from his maternal grandfather, Ross Baxter, who was a native of Ireland.
James Devine, gamekeeper from Seaton, Haddingtonshire (East Lothian), married Margaret Baxter at Symington, Ayrshire in 1888. The Baxter family were well known in the area. Margaret and at least two of her siblings were born at Symington, another was born at nearby Monkton. Margaret's parents (Ross Devine and Jean Dermont - from Dundonald Parish) were married at Symington in May, 1846.
