I saw this memorial in April 2007 and was struck by the fact that it doesn't record the regiment of the fallen but the house, croft or place where they stayed. Is this unique to this memorial or are there others like it?

`Forgotten hero' gets recognition at last

The name of Lairg-born Private Neil Gunn MacLeod has at last been added to his village war memorial - nearly 50 years after he died on active service, aged just 19.
Pte MacLeod, from Mid Fearn, near Edderton, was killed by enemy fire while on National Service with the Black Watch in Korea in 1952.
But it has taken a 16-month campaign by local branches of the Royal British Legion Scotland to have his name added to the roll of honour on Edderton War Memorial.
An extra stone plinth has now been added to the base of the monument, which already records the names of those from the parish of Edderton who fell in two world wars.
His sacrifice will be recognised at the forthcoming Remembrance Day service on Sunday, November 11th this year coinciding with the actual date of the Armistice in 1918.
Born and initially raised in Lairg, Neil moved with his parents to Mid Fearn between Ardgay and Edderton after World War II, in which his father, also
called Neil, had served as a sergeant in the Lovat Scouts.
His father, a regular serviceman before the war and drill sergeant to the Territorials in Lairg, took a job after hostilities ceased as a shepherd with Sir John Brooke, one of his former commanding officers in the Lovat Scouts.
After leaving school, young Neil was employed as an apprentice joiner with A McAughtrie & Son in Bonar Bridge, but at the age of 18 he decided to follow his father into the army.
He joined the Seaforth Highlanders but later transferred to the Black Watch. He was posted to Korea and landed with his battalion at Pusan in June 1952.
Fighting in trenches and dugouts, British casualties in the Korean campaign were heavy - 1078 killed, 8364 wounded and 921 taken as prisoners of war, mostly National Servicemen.
Pte MacLeod was killed by enemy fire on August 4th, 1952, and lies buried in the UN Cemetery in Pusan.
Inclusion of his name on the Edderton War Memorial is the result of combined efforts by the Creich and Kincardine and the Tain branches of the Royal Brotish Legion Scotland.
Captain Graham Offin, honorary president of the Tain Branch, played a leading role.
He told The Northern Times: "The fact that Pte MacLeod's name was eligible for inclusion on the memorial was brought to our attention by the British Korean Veterans' Association in July last year. I am very pleased that we have now been able to add his name to those who were from the Edderton parish and died on active service."
The British Legion were assisted by Group Capt S J Coy, Bodmin, who supplied Pte MacLeod's service particulars; Pte MacLeod's nephew, Mr Neil Deans of Kildary; Mr Frank Ellison, honorary general secretary of the British Korean Veterans' Association, and the Highland Council, who authorise additions and are responsible for the care of war memorials in their area.
The belated addition of Pte Macleod's name may help to dispel the mistaken belief in some quarters that war memorials are purely to honour the fallen of the two world wars. New entries are at the discretion of individual councils, and there is no time barrier if a genuine oversight can be righted.
