Hartwood Hospital was in its time the largest mental hospital in Scotland.
More information can be found here.
At the entrance gates are two large lamps:

A plaque on one of the gates explains the story behind them:

I'll keep this one in this forum section as it covers the community as well as the staff of the hospital. |

Daily Record 17 April 2018-
Sale of Hartwood Hospital finally agreed as NHS sells to construction company
The former hospital has been up for sale for a number of years and NHS Lanarkshire began negotiations with the preferred bidder in November 2016.
The sale of the former Hartwood Hospital site has finally been agreed.
NHS Lanarkshire concluded the sale of the site of the building, which has been plagued by antisocial behaviour in recent years, to the Wishaw-based construction company The Taylor Group Scotland Limited.
The former hospital has been up for sale for a number of years and NHS Lanarkshire began negotiations with the preferred bidder in November 2016 following consultation with the Scottish Government.
NHS Lanarkshire chief executive Calum Campbell said: “The Taylor Group through their sister company Taylor Homes have over 20 years’ experience of residential development within Lanarkshire.
“They are aware of the heritage of the site and have made a commitment to respect this.
“NHS Lanarkshire’s property and support services team currently has the site’s former war memorial plaque in its possession and it is our intention to work in partnership with the company and the local community to ensure it is restored within any development of the site.”
David Findlay, from The Taylor Group Scotland Limited, added: “We are delighted to have concluded this business with NHS Lanarkshire.
“We are looking forward to working with the local community in the development of the site.”
Shotts politicians have welcomed the sale of the site which was damaged by two fires in March 2016 and August last year.
MSP Alex Neil said: “It is good news that the Hartwood Hospital has finally been sold and that the sites heritage will be protected, with the war memorial plaque being restored along with any future development.
“The site needs to be developed as soon as possible and not left derelict any longer, as we do not want to see a repeat of the antisocial behaviour and vandalism that has plagued Hartwood Hospital in recent years.” |
