An extract from the Scottish Archive Network:
Gibson & Lumgair (Scotland) Ltd was established in 1882 by George D Gibson (1940) and Andrew G Lumgair (d 1911) at their factory at Deanbank Mill, Galashiels using the old Free Church in Island Road as a warehouse. In 1894 they built a new factory at St Mary's Mill, Selkirk and moved their business there. They became a limited company in 1907, and on the death of Andrew Lumgair, his interest passed to his sons Morrison (d 1917) and David (d 1933). At David's death the family interest passed to Morrison Lumgair's widow.

JOHN HENDERSON, Pte. K.O.S.B.
John Walker Henderson – age 41 – Private (7108) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John had a long association with the Volunteers and the Territorial 4th KOSB and had served in the South African War. He was employed at St. Mary's Mill in Selkirk when re-enlisted at the outbreak of war and he was posted to the 2nd KOSB in France in November 1914 but was invalided home. When he had recovered he was posted to the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli where he was killed.
Born 1874 in Selkirk. Son of the late James Henderson (died 1900) and of Helen (Walker) Henderson of 25 Dunsdale Road, Selkirk. Husband of the late Mary (Welsh) Henderson (died 1914) of 5 Dunsdalehaugh, Selkirk who he married in 1905 in Selkirk.
Missing in Action on 24 August 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Selkirk War Memorial and Roll of Honour.


GEORGE HOGG, Lc. Corp. K.O.S.B.
George Hogg – age 21 – Lance Corporal (201090) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George was employed in the designing department at St. Mary's Mill in Selkirk when he enlisted as Private (8000) in the 1/4th KOSB in August 1915. He joined the battalion in Egypt and served in Palestine before the battalion moved to France in April 1918. George was transferred at some point to the 2nd KOSB.
Born 1897 in Selkirk. Son of Robert and Mary Maggie (Fairgrieve) Hogg of Glen Cottage, Ashybank, Selkirk.
Killed in Action on 18 September 1918 and buried in Gouzeaucourt New British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Selkirk War Memorial and Roll of Honour.


GEORGE HUME, Pte. K.O.S.B.
George Hume – age 34 – Lance Corporal (6725) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George was employed as a pattern weaver at the St. Mary's Mill in Selkirk when he enlisted in August 1914 and he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1881 in Walkerburn, Innerleithen, Peeblesshire. Son of the late Isabella (Sanderson) Hume (died 1912) and of Henry Hume of 66 Tweedside Cottages, Walkerburn.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Selkirk War Memorial and Roll of Honour, on the Selkirk Parish Church memorial and on the Walkerburn and Peebles War Memorials.


TOM LEES, Sergt. Scottish Rifles.
Thomas Lees – age 24 – Sergeant (18700) 10th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Thomas was employed in the St. Mary's Mill in Selkirk when he enlisted as Private (31260) in the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1914. He transferred to the Scottish Rifles and joined his battalion in France in August 1915.
Born 1892 in St. Rollox, Glasgow. Son of the late John and Ann (MacDonald) Lees who had married in 1891 in Walkerburn. In 1891 John, aged 30, was a cabinetmaker at St Rollox, Glasgow.
Husband of Catherine Janet Lees of 27 Heatherlie Park, Selkirk. (Source: CWGC)
Possibly Catherine J. Anderson who married in 1916 in Willesden, Middlesex.
Missing in Action on 15 September 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

R. M. LUMGAIR, Capt. K.O.S.B.
Robert Robertson Morrison Lumgair – age 26 – Captain 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Known as Morris he was a director of the woollen manufacturer Gibson & Lumgair of St. Mary's Mill in Selkirk. Educated at Oatlands College, Harrogate and at Uppingham College, Rutland, he was commissioned in the Territorial 4th KOSB in December 1912, promoted to Lieutenant in February 1915 and landed with the 1/4th KOSB at Gallipoli in June 1915. He then served in Egypt, where he was promoted to Captain in June 1916, and in Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born 1890 in Melrose, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Andrew Gray Lumgair (died 1911) of The Priory, Selkirk and of the late Isabella Stevenson (Morrison) Lumgair (died 1915) of Eildon View, Galashiels, Selkirkshire. Husband of Gladys Marguerite (Laidlaw) Lumgair of Rosalee, Hawick, Roxburghshire who he married in 1914 in Hawick.
Killed in Action on 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.
Also named on the Selkirk War Memorial and Roll of Honour.


ANDREW REEKIE, Sergt. King's Royal Rifles.
Andrew Reekie – age 36 – Sergeant (A343) 8th Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps.
Andrew of South Port, Selkirk had been a woollen mill worker at St. Mary's Mill for four years when he enlisted August 1914. He had previously enlisted as Private (4186) in the KOSB in November 1901 and had 8 years service. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 as a Corporal and he was promoted to Sergeant in the following year but was wounded in August 1916 and evacuated home. He was discharged from the army in February 1917 due to his wounds and he was awarded a Silver War Badge (31573) Andrew died of tuberculosis at his home at Deepslade Cottage in Selkirk.
Born 1884 in Selkirk. Son of the late Mary (Moyes) Reekie (died 1897) and of Christopher Reekie, music teacher, (died 1916) of Market Place, Selkirk. Husband of Beatrice Wiggins (Wallis) Reekie who he married in 1912 in Selkirk.
Died on 4 February 1921 and buried in a Commonwealth War Grave in Selkirk Cemetery.
His son Frederick William Reekie was killed on 18 June 1940 serving with the 5th KOSB in France.


HUGH RODEN, Pte. K.O.S.B.
Hugh Roden – age 19 – Private (6439) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Hugh was employed at the St. Mary's Mill in Selkirk and he was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB. He was mobilised in August 1914 and he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle of Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1896 in Selkirk. Son of Philip and Janet (Thomson) Roden of Heatherlie Park and of 2 Curror Street, Selkirk.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Selkirk War Memorial and Roll of Honour.

GEORGE SCREEN, Pte. H.L.I.
George Screen – age 37 – Private (42826) 14th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
In 1902 George was a tweed finisher when he enlisted as Private (8525) to serve in the 3rd Volunteer Service Company KOSB in the South African War. He was working in the St. Mary's Mill in Selkirk when he enlisted as Private (6937) in the 4th King's Own Scottish Borderers Reserve in 1914. About two years later he was posted to France and was transferred to the 14th HLI.
Born 1879 at Dunsdalehaugh, Selkirk as Martin Screen. Son of the late Isabella (Lamb) Screen (died 1908) and of the late John Screen (died 1911) of 12 Dunsdalehaugh, Selkirk. Husband of Sarah Elizabeth Dunn (Mathieson) Screen of Back Row, Selkirk and of 14 Dunsdalehaugh, Selkirk who he married in 1907 in Selkirk as George Martin Screen.
Missing in Action on 24 April 1917 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Selkirk War Memorial and Roll of Honour.


Wm. SINCLAIR, Gunner R.F.A.
William Sinclair – age 26 – Driver (645959) 51st Division Ammunition Column, Royal Field Artillery.
William was a woollen pattern weaver at St. Mary's Mill in Selkirk when he enlisted. He was kicked by a mule and died in the 2nd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station at Lijssenthoek near Ypres.
Born 1890 in Selkirk. Son of James and Mary (Gowans) Sinclair of 11 Back Feus, Selkirk.
Died on Active Service on 27 July 1917 and buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Selkirk War Memorial and Roll of Honour.


JAS. THOMSON, Pte. Royal Scots.
James Thomson – age 30 – Private (45214) 1st (Garrison) Battalion, Royal Scots.
James was employed at the St. Mary's Mill in Selkirk when he enlisted as Private (S/2837) in September 1914. He joined the 1/5th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in Egypt in February 1916 and served as Private (201290) until he was transferred to the Royal Scots in Alexandria in December. He moved with the battalion to Cyprus in April 1917 but returned to Alexandria due to illness and was admitted to the 19th General Hospital in March 1918. James was drowned while sailing back to Cyprus when the steamer” Kosseir” was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UB-51.
Born 1887 in Selkirk. Son of the late Isabella (Roberts) Thomson (died 1898) and of Robert Thomson of South Port, Selkirk.
Killed by enemy action/Lost at Sea on 20 July 1918 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the Selkirk War Memorial and Roll of Honour.

GEOF. A. TUGWELL, Capt. Yorkshire Rgt.
Geoffrey Arnold Tugwell – age 24 – Captain, 1/4th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment. (Green Howards)
Geoffrey was educated at Eastman's School at Southsea in Hampshire and at Lancing College in West Sussex until December 1909. He was a member of the Officer Training Corps for three years. On leaving school he travelled in France and Germany to study languages there. Geoffrey trained at the South of Scotland Technical College in Galashiels and had worked in the designing department of the St. Mary's Mill in Selkirk before he gained a commission in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in April 1915 but at the end of the month he was wounded and evacuated to hospital in Newbury, Berkshire. It was February 1916 before he could rejoin his battalion but he was wounded again at Martinpuich on the Somme in September and again evacuated home. He returned to France and was promoted to Captain while in command of a company in March 1917 but he was killed a month later.
Born 1893 in Scarborough, Yorkshire. Son of Frank Alfred and Louisa Annie (Backhouse) Tugwell of 40 Esplanade, Scarborough.
Missing in Action on 23 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Selkirk War Memorial and Roll of Honour and on the Lancing College memorial.


ROBt. WEIR, Pte. K.O.S.B.
Robert Weir – age 25 – Private (6558) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a textile designer with Gibson & Lumgair at the St. Mary's Mill in Selkirk and he was living at Ashybank in Selkirk when he enlisted in the Territorial 4th KOSB in June 1913. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born December 1890 in Galashiels, Selkirkshire. Son of George and Janet Agnes (Sanderson) Weir of 272 Galapark Road, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Selkirk War Memorial and Roll of Honour, on the Selkirk West United Free Church memorial and on the Galashiels War Memorial.


T.W. WHILLANS, Pte. K.O.S.B.
Thomas Wood Whillans – age 34 – Private (201509) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was employed at the St. Mary's Mill in Selkirk when he enlisted. He died as the result of gas poisoning in the 54th (London) General Hospital at Wimereux.
Born c.1885 in Maryport, Cumberland. Son of the late Elizabeth (Wood) Whillans (died 1901) and of John Stevenson Whillans of Wilton Dean, Hawick, Roxburghshire. Husband of Betsy Green (Gray) Whillans of 32 Curror Street, Selkirk who he married in 1904 in Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 17 April 1918 and buried in Wimereux Communal Cemetery, France
Also named on the Selkirk War Memorial and Roll of Honour, and on the Hawick Roll of Honour together with his elder brother James, Private (16185) and a younger brother George, Lance Corporal (14980) both of the Royal Scots Fusiliers.

J.E. WALLIS, Pte. K.O.S.B.
James Edward Wallis – age 30 – Private (35232) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was employed in the St. Mary's Mill in Selkirk and was a prominent player with the Selkirk Rugby and Cricket Clubs.
Born 1888 in Potternewton, Leeds, Yorkshire. Son of Frederick William and Polly (Shelton) Wallis of 10 Raeburn Place, Selkirk. Husband of Bessie Cowan (Carruthers) Wallis of 15 Dunsdalehaugh, Selkirk who he married in 1909 in Selkirk.
Killed in Action on 4 October 1918 and buried in Proville British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Selkirk War Memorial and Roll of Honour, and on the St. John's Episcopal Church memorial in Selkirk together with his brothers Ben Shelton Wallis, Private (461716) Labour Corps and William Wallis, Private (6726) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, KOSB.
Also listed on this roll is another brother, Frederick Donald Wallis, Private (6507 & 200390) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, KOSB who landed at Gallipoli in June 1915 and was taken prisoner by the Turks. He was eventually demobilised in February 1919.


HENRY YOUNG, Pte. K.O.S.B.
Henry Young – age 34 – Private (201424) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Henry was a warper at St. Mary's Mill in Selkirk when he enlisted in March 1916. As Private (8478) he was on his way to join his battalion in Egypt when the Troopship “Ivernia” was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UB-47 on 1 January 1917. He and the other survivors were landed at Suda Bay on Crete before continuing their journey. Henry served in Palestine where he was wounded before the battalion moved to France in April 1918.
Born 1883 in Selkirk. Son of the late Jessie (Millar) Young (died 1907) and of the late Robert Young (died 1911) of 13 Buccleuch Road, Selkirk. Brother of Stewart Young of 41 Raeburn Place, Selkirk.
Missing in Action on 1 September 1918 and named on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France.
Also named on the Selkirk War Memorial and Roll of Honour.
