Golspie War Memorial, Sutherland
Location: South end of Main Street
OS Ref:NH 829 997
This memorial originally sat at the other end of the village but the A9 had to be closed for the Remembrance Service. It was moved to it's own gardens in the 1970s

Gunner Alexander Sutherland, R.G.A., was born at Golspie, Sutherlandshire, on May 20th, 1884, and was eductaed at Golspie Public School. At an early age he joined the Navy, which he left when he was 21. He subsequently worked as a miner at Bonnyrigg, Mid-Lothian. At the time of his enlistment in the Army he was employed on the Perth Corporation Tramways. He enlisted on October 16th, 1914, and was killed on the Somme on August 6th, 1916. He is buried in Peronne Road British Cemetery, south of Albert. He married Irvina Davidson, by whom and 5 children he is survived. |

"Private D. Clark, B Company 5th Leicester Regiment, who is a native of Golspie, was shot by a sniper while on sentry duty. His parents received word on Friday of his death. He lived for half an hour after being shot. He was well known in Golspie, and before enlisting was in the service of Lord and Lady Castlereagh. A sympathetic message was received from Lord and Lady Castlereagh by the parents on Friday."

Peter Campbell – age 36 – Private (S/40021) 7th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Peter enlisted in December 1915 as Private (4937) and was posted to the 2nd Seaforths before transferring to the 7th Battalion.
Born 1881 in Kildonan, Sutherland. Son of Peter and Elizabeth (Gilchrist) Campbell of Golspie, Sutherland. Husband of Jane (Millar or Robson) Campbell of 46 Wood Market, Kelso who he married in 1903 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 12 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
