Drymen - Stirling District
Drymen war memorial stands next to the village square near the library and is a simple tapering granit cross. It bears a particularly fine inscription.

A fine inscription Jim and a plain but impressive memorial. It looks quite well looked after as well.

The inscription is an adaption of the wording on the Memorial Scroll which the casuaties Next of Kin received.

I suspect that Battery Sergeant Major George Menzies's death might have been post-war.
This is his DCM Citation - The London Gazette 16 April 1918 Supplement:30636 Page:4676

16194 B.S.M. G. Menzies, R.G.A. (Dumbarton)
.
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to
duty. He has always displayed coolness and
courage of the highest order, freely exposing
himself in action, and maintaining good
order and discipline in difficult circumstances.
He has also shown great devotion in attending
to the wounded.

BSM George Menzies 16194 of 109 Heavy Battery R.G.A. was discharged as no longer fit for active service on 13 December 1917 and was awarded a Silver War Badge No. 282131. He was aged 37.
He had originally enlisted on 13 August 1903.

I don't see a matching death in Scotland but there is a George Menzies aged 37 who died in the December Quarter of 1917 at Hartley Whitney in Hampshire.

I find it hard to believe that this is a non-com but it looks very like it?????
