Fearnan War Memorial (the tablet actually says Fernan), beside Loch Tay. I'm uncertain what district council is responsible for this memorial so I'm guessing Perth & Kinross.

Jim

Yes, you are right, Perth & Kinross again. There is a very easy was to find this out. If you go to this google.maps.uk and do a search it comes up with the town and in a little bubble gives you the local authority and the postcode.

Note that 3 out of eight names are Scots Guards and only one is Black Watch.

Regards

Adam

Jim,

Like the Fearnan Memorial. This is one I had not seen any mention of. The names are replicated on the Kenmore Memorial under 'Fearnan'. There are several other places named on Kenmore which begs the question - are there other separate memorials somewhere?

18/01/07 - response from Jim McGinlay (previously given in a new thread and since deleted)
"Hi Mark,
I only realised yesterday that Fearnan and Fortingall were not listed on the Royal British Legion Directory...don't know why. I think the directory is fairly comprehensive so I would think hopefully these are the ony two missing...but you never know. If those Ewes get any bigger the Fearnan memorial might go missing again".

PERTHSHIRE ADVERTISER: 28.08.1920
FEARNAN
War Memorial Unveiled by Marchioness of Breadalbane

The memorial erected to the fallen heroes of this district was unveiled on Saturday last. It is erected at Tighanloan at the juntion of Kenmore and Fortingall Roads, and is a rustic cairn circular in shape rising to a height of 14 feet, built of native stone. Service was held in the schoolhouse, at which the Rev. W.A. Gillies and Rev. J.B. Atholl Gordon officiated, then a procession was formed headed by a piper playing laments, school children, comrades of the war and the public. Mr Campbell, Borland, who introduced Lady Breadalbane, referred to the great number of village boys who enlisted, a third of these made the supreme sacrifice. Lady Breadalbane said that a great many of these memorials were put up along our quiet country villages and glens, which showed the spirit and patriotism of the people, and would always remind us as we pass along this road of those who gave their lives for us. May we, therefore, never forget them. The monument was then unveiled.
The tablet, which is of Aberdeen granite, with letters in lead, bears the following names:- Pte. Peter Mathieson, Black Watch; Pte. James Dewar, Scots Guards; Pte. Duncan Fraser, Scots Guards; Pte. Malcolm Fraser, Scots Greys; Pte. Duncan M'Phail, Scots Guards; Dvr. John Fraser, R.F.A.; Pte. Hugh Cowan, R.S.F.; Cpl. Duncan Mathieson, H.L.I.
Afterwards the 66th Paraphrase was sung, the Benediction pronounced, the bugler sounded the 'Last Post', and then a number of beautiful wreaths were placed on the monument. At the schoolhouse the flag was displayed at half-mast. A vote of thanks to lady Breadalbane was proposed by Mr Donald Fraser, to which her Ladyship replied. The architect for the monument is Mr Shepphard, of Mills & Shepphard, Dundee.

I've just read the article. One in three of the men who enlisted from Fearnan died. That's quite a sacrifice for a small village. No wonder they felt they needed their own memorial.
