There's a man called J. Ross listed by the S.R.U. library, but not it's own Roll of Honour, as one of the internationalists who died in WW1. However I can't find him on CWGC. Can anyone find me the right man please?

There is J. Ross rugby international who has a wikipedia entry, but there's no man on CWGC called Ross who died on the date given, 31/10/1914. There are two privates called James Ross of the London Scottish who died on the 01/11/1914 however, but no extra info on them, which rugby internationalists usually have.

There's a Scotsman article which gives this info about, presumably the same Scotland international J. Ross of the London Scottish, who died in the war, it reads "It was 31 October 1914, the date on which to this day the regiment formally remembers its fallen with a dinner at its headquarters, in London's Horseferry Road.
Among the men who fell at Messines on that afternoon was James Ross, who had captained the rugby club in 1901-2 and again in 1904-5. He was reported missing at the end of that day's fighting."

He was capped eight times for Scotland between 1895–1897.[1] He also played for Edinburgh Academicals.
He was the brother of Francis Dods who was also capped for Scotland."

[UPDATE]

John Henry Dods died aged 40 in the accidental sinking of the H.M.S. Natal. He was a civilian (estate factor) so would not qualify for CWGC inclusion. Apparently there was a reception to which civilians had been invited including his wife and three children, all of whom perished.

Interesting stuff, a sad tragedy.

I read on another forum that the admiralty didn't include the civilian deaths in the list of those killed and this has caused confusion about how many did perish in total.
