|Woodside Senior Secondary School
The original school was located at the junction of Woodlands Road and Eldon Street, Glasgow. Part of the building is now home to the STUC and the other part to The Old Schoolhouse Restaurant.
Woodside Secondary School opened in September 1882 and closed on June 30th 1999. In 117 years more than 70,000 pupils passed through these halls of learning, many going on to further education and University. |Snippet found in the Stirling Observer, 17th June 1916 in the Balfron (Stirlingshire) Section.
Unfortunately, only half of the article can be seen, but from the visible details - the following information can be confirmed.
Connection to Balfron is unknown at the moment.
He is listed in the City of Glasgow Roll of Honour.

|Named on the Hownam Parish War Memorial in Roxburghshire as:
LT. J.G.G. CUTHBERT.
John George Gunn Cuthbert – age 26 – Lieutenant, 28th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
John was educated at Hownam school and at Woodside Higher Grade School in Glasgow before studying the Arts (M.A. 1913) and then Divinity at Edinburgh University. He was a Cadet Corporal in the Officer Training Corps until March 1915 when he was commissioned in the King's Own Scottish Borderers. He went to France in October 1915 and was attached to the MGC. John was promoted to Lieutenant on 1 October but died just under three weeks later.
Born 1890 in Hownam. Son of the late James Cuthbert, former schoolmaster at Hownam (died April 1916) and of Christina (Gunn) Cuthbert of Hownam, Kelso.
Died of Wounds on 19 October 1916 and buried in Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial, on the Old College memorial in Edinburgh University, on the University's Roll of the Fallen and on the Students of Divinity section of the Church of Scotland memorial in St Giles Cathedral.
