I was in Dumfries museum photographing memorials recently and my contact produced a number of certificates from storage. Here is one that I have managed to trace to a name on the Brydekirk memorial.

It does not seem to be the same as the certificate that accompanied the 'Death Penny', at least the ones that I have seen. Any idea of the purpose or circumstances of its issue? There are a couple of others, the same but in different frames.

That is a memorial scroll. Each name was individually added by a calligrapher and they are fascinating pieces of work.
Scrolls to senior officers etc showed better calligraphy than to the "ranks" - the task of adding names to these scrolls were given to the junior calligraphers.
All the students at the London School of Arts and Crafts were taught by the same man, Grailly Hewitt, who taught them how to write in this style - based on the Fifteenth Century Italian Manuscripts.
The vast majority of the scrolls were completed within two years and the school received the princely sum of 1 1/2d (1.5 old pennies) per scroll from the Government.

The "Slip" of paper which arrived inside the plaque box was mass produced with a facsimile signature of the King and an embossed Coat-of-Arms on it. Basic but collectable.

This WM was ordered on 10/4/1919 by Mr. Thomas Byers, Schoolhouse, Brydekirk, Annan, from Beattie & Co Carlsile on Log book No 2704 cost of £171.
Information collected from Log Book dated 15/6/1915-5/9/1919 at Beattie & Co Carlsile in July 2010.

WAR MEMORIALS

BRYDEKIRK, ANNAN.— A memorial tothe men who fell in the war from the parish of Brydekirk, Annan, was unveiled on Saturday afternoon by Major C. R. Dudgeon of Cargenholm, in presence of a large gathering. The monument which is of grey Scottish granite, has been erected near the Parish Church at a cost of £171. Panels of the monument bear the names of the men who fell.

I think these casualties are listed in near enough chronological order.

Here's details of Albert Holliday who was killed in October 1914, the next four men; Halliday, Warwick, Kirkpatrick and Carlyle all perished on the 25th of September 1915, at the Battle of Loos. Next is Aitchison who died slightly before these men on the 14th, Major Vivers afterwards, as stated above, died in the October of 1915.

(Glasgow Herald 21st of November 1914)
"Mrs Holliday, 3 New Stock Street, Paisley, has received intimation that her husband Private Albert Holliday, of the Gordon Highlanders, was killed in action on October 24th, Private Holliday who was a native of Annan, was formerly in the K.O.S.B., and re-enlisted at the outbreak of war. He was greenkeeper of Charleston Bowling Club, and leaves a widow and 5 young children."
