Unfortunately the information I have on Paulin is patchy at best, espescially in his later years, but I've listed what I have below. He specialised in portrait busts of contemporary and historic figures. In his war memorial work he appears to have had a thing for kneeling figures with outstretched hands.

DENNY


Born 14th August 1888 in Muckhart. Son of George Paulin, minister of the parish.
Educated at Dollar Academy.
Attended Edinburgh College of Art under head of sculpture Percy Portsmouth.
1911 won bursary to travel to Rome.
1912 After a short stay in Paris he took a studio in Florence until the war.
1914 Served as a trooper with the Lothians and Borders Horse.
Discharged after being severely injured in an accident.
1917 Joined the R.A.F. serving as an intelligence officer and interpreter in Italy.
1919 After de-mob set up studio at 36a Buccleuch Street, Glasgow which he kept until 1923.
1920 Elected A.R.S.A. Also 'The Studio' Volume LXXX1920 published a photograph of his sketch model for the Kirkcudbright war memorial which was exhibited at the R.S.A. exhibition. War memorial for Dollar Academy unveiled.
1921 Married Muriel Margaret Cairns, the daughter of Rev. J.E. Cairns who succeeded Paulin's father as minister at Muckhart. Kirkcudbright war memorial unveiled 14th April 1921.
1922 Bulletin newspaper published photograph of Paulin working on the Beaumont Hamel memorial.
1923-24 working on 'Courage' for Rutherglen war memorial and Dollar parish memorial. Memorial to Lord Lister unveiled on 17th September 1924. 'Courage' and Rutherglen war memorial unveiled 26th October 1924.
1953 Bust of Queen Elizabeth II
1962 Died on 10th July 1962, Swindon.

A picture of Paulin working on the Beaumont Hamel 51st Highland Division Memorial which was published in The Scots Pictorial.
I've never even seen a photograph of the actual memorial, judging by the scale of the figure it must be a striking monument.

Interesting story about the model used for the Highland Division memorial. It's actually of a man in the Glasgow Highlanders, which were never part of the 51st.

The model was Robert Rowan, a pre-war Territorial, whose number was 926. He was awarded both the DCM and the Belgian Croix de Guerre.

On the 26th and 27th June 2010 Dollar Academy are hosting an exhibition of the work of the sculptor George Henry Paulin who is a former pupil. On display will be a large number of photographs of Paulin working in his studio as well as a selection of his smaller sculptures. The aim of the exhibition is to raise awareness of this artist who not only created lasting landmarks in many Scottish towns and cities but also helped to define how a generation of brave soldiers would be remembered.
