Stonehouse War Memorial Inscription and Additional Details
UKNIWM Ref No 6007

The memorial is a simple slim cross on a long shaft which lies on a four tiered octagonal plinth/ base. There is no decoration on either the plinth/base or cross. The Dedication inscriptions for WW1 and WW2 are on the top tier of the plinth and the names of fallen are inscribed on either side of the shaft of the cross. The WW1 names are on the side of the shaft that faces the cemetery gates and the WW2 names on the reverse face. The cross itself lies in the centre of a small well tended cemetery.

The address is Stonehouse Cemetery, Manse Road, Stonehouse, South Lanarkshire.

Just to let members know that I have on behalf of Stonehouse Heritage Group, supported by the Community Council and Changing Places applied to Awards For All, for funding to repair and clean the memorial, also refurbish the existing inscriptions and add 24 names missing from WW1 and 4 names missing from WW2. Mr Bill Stanley of South Lanarkshire Council is happy for this project to proceed and the works will be carried out by Registered Monumental Masons if funding is granted.

My application to Awards for All, for funding to refurbish and add missing names to the Stonehouse War Memorial has been rejected, but we shall re submit an application.

Funding is now in place to refurbish and add the missing names to the memorial, with thanks to Awards for All. A rededication service is planned for 8th November, with the works being carried out by Stewarton Memorials Wishaw.

A rededication service is taking place at Stonehouse Cemetery on Saturday 8th November 10.30 am for 10.45, after the refurbishment of the memorial and the addition of 28 names missing from WW1 & WW2.

1 SCOTS are providing the Colour Party, Piper and Bugler for the service,
The Lord Lieutenant, Povost, MP,MSP, British Legion, Cameronian Family Assoc, Stonehouse Pipe Band and many other organisation are all taking part in the service.

All are welcome to the Cemetery, Manse Road Stonehouse

Thanks for that David, it was a pleasure to be able to arrange the the rededication ceremony. The many people that attended todays ceremony is testament to the high regard in which we hold for the men and women of our Armed Forces and,for those who have made the supreme sacrifice.

The memorial looks great, and the weather was just right for the service. The sun came out, and the rain held off until the service had concluded.

In the transcriptions above Plenderleith is given as Alen, I think the font obscures it and it really is Alex.

An unusual surname which belongs to only 12 in the CWGC databse (7 WW1, 5 WW2).
