Archie's niece, daughter of Robert Moffat, is a neighbour and friend of mine. She has his Royal Scots badge - she knew nothing of the HLI connection. I suggested he might have transferred when he was promoted; both were in the 52nd Lowland Division. He was also involved in the Quintinshill disaster. His medal card states he arrived in the Balkans on 2nd July 1915.

The history of the 8th Battalion of the HLI seems to be a bit vague.
The Long, Long Trail http://www.1914-1918.net/hli.htm has:
8th (Lanark) Battalion
August 1914 : at Lanark. Part of the Lothian Brigade, unattached to a Division and on Scottish Coast Defences. Seems to have been disbanded by May 1916.

Yes, I read that too. There's clearly discrepancy in the numbers. SDGW and SNWM both have him in 7th (Blythswood) Battalion (T) but his medal card and CWGC have him in the 8th (Lanark) Battalion. It would make sense for him to be in the Lanark Battalion as he lived in Forth; perhaps he was a pre-war territorial and then transferred to 7th at some point. Given that his medal card has him in the Balkan Theatre from 2.7.15 and his name is on the Helles Memorial, he doesn't seem to have been on Scottish Coastal Defence. Unfortunately his service record seems to be one of the 80%. I can't find it anyway.

Quite a few 8th HLI men transferred to the 7th Royal Scots to make its numbers up to overseas service strength before it left for Gallipoli. A couple of them were killed at Gretna.

Thanks for that, Adam. I didn't know about HLI men attached to the Royal Scots. Do you know how the Battalion was brought upto strength after the crash? I seem to remember (I think) that the 52nd Division's departure to Gallipoli was delayed until it was sorted.

Thank you Adam. I knew I could rely on members of the Forum to provide a solution; you all know so much more than I do about military history (mind you, that wouldn't be difficult - I know very little!) I'll be able to pass on the info to my friend; she's 92 and grew up hearing about her uncle who was killed at Gallipoli. We all know that family stories can grow arms and legs so it's good to have definitive information.

No problem folks. As far as I know the 1/7th Royal Scots was made up to strength with other volunteers from the units attached to the Forth Defences and not allocated for overseas service so the 1/6th and 1/10th Royal Scots and 1/8th HLI would have provided more men.

The 2/7th Royal Scots would also have been able to provide men although I think it was the existing first line territorial units which were used.

It's interesting that the Minister of Forth Church, who served in the Great War, and died as a result of his service, is not included on the memorial.

The Rev Brock died at Rothesay, but his usual address was The Manse in Forth. Cause of death: Spinal Sclerosis, Cystitis and Cerebral Haemorrhage.
