Ardrossan WW1 War Memorial

Designed by Dr. Macgregor Chalmers, a Glasgow architect and his successor, Mr J. Jeffry Waddell who finished the work upon Dr. Chalmers' untimely death.
The memorial was sculpted by Mr. James A. Young of Glasgow and its erection was supervised by ex Bailie John Inglis, a builder from Ardrossan.

Depicted in the stonework are some personalities from Scottish History (but I'm at a loss to explain the reason why?)

I've always liked the Ardrossan memorial, its good to see something Scottish. As far as I can remember the figures are:
Upper shaft - 'RELIGION' , SAINT COLUMBA
Mid shaft - 'NAVY' ADMIRAL WOOD & 'ARMY' ROBERT THE BRUCE
lower shaft. 'PEACE' DAVID LIVINGSTONE, ROBERT BURNS & JAMES WATT
The choice of Admiral Wood to represent the navy is interesting. There is an article on Admiral Wood here:

The memorial is made of blonde sandstone and is in the form of a tall cross on a circular base. The base is about 6 to 8m in diameter and consists of a circular slabbed area gained by two concentric circular steps. The memorial faces west towards the sea. On either side of the memorial plinth is a semicircular sandstone low wall with bench. There is a carved detail of circular celtic knotwork on the front edge of each bench. The base of the memorial is cemented sandstone blocks and is about 3m wide by 2 to 3m high. The main inscription is carved on the upper part of the base. Below that, the brass plaque with the names of the fallen. Below that 1914 – 1918 is carved. The cross is probably 7 to 8m high. There are three heavily carved panels on the shaft of the cross. At the top panel is a figure identified as ‘St Columba’ and the word ‘Religion’. The middle panel has two figures identified as ‘Admiral Hood’ and ‘Bruce’ and the words ‘Navy’ and ‘Army’. The lowest panel has three figures identified as ‘’Livingstone’, Watt’ and ‘Burns’ and the word ‘Peace’. Above these three panels is a celtic knotwork carving on the cross which has a plain central boss. No wheel. There are further small carvings on the narrow faces of the cross and a panel of carved detail on the narrow faces of the shaft opposite the St Columba panel. There is an incised cross with simple celtic knotwork on the reverse face of the cross. The memorial is set on a grassy park between the South Beach Road or Promenade and the sea.

Proposed cost of £1600. Whether it was this in the end is unknown.
