There was an item today on Border TV's local news about W/O Edward Callander DFM. His great nephew has researched his story and will soon be publishing it. He stated that his great uncle was executed by the Germans for repeatedly attempting to escape, so I thought I would have a look around for myself. This from CWGC and he is not listed on SNWM or any other local memorials that I have found.

Name: CALLANDER, EDWARD
Initials: E
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Warrant Officer
Regiment/Service: Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
Unit Text: 115 Sqdn.
Date of Death: 07/03/1944
Service No: 1061420
Awards: D F M
Additional information: Son of Edward Callander and of Isabella Callander (nee Bryden).
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 213.
Memorial: RUNNYMEDE MEMORIAL

I also found this from the 'lost bombers' site:

Type Wellington
Serial Number X3466
Squadron 115
Operation Stuttgart
6th May 1942

X3466 was one of two No.115 Sqdn Wellingtons lost on this operation. See: X3591. Airborne 2130 6May42 from Marham. Crashed in the vicinity of Laon (Aisne), France, where P/O Leland is buried in the city's St-Just Communal Cemetery. F/L Paterson, a New Zealander serving in the RAF, has no known grave and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. Sgt Callender gained his DFM while serving with No.75 Sqdn, details being Gazetted 2Sep42. In Jan44, he escaped from Stalag Luft 1V, but was recaptured and turned over to the Gestapo. He died in Dachau Concentration Camp 7Mar44. He also, is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. F/L N.Paterson KIA P/O P.H.F.W.Leland RNZAF KIA Sgt A.E.Smith PoW Sgt B.A.Ramsbottom PoW Sgt E.Callendar DFM Exe. Sgt B.A.Ramsbottom was interned in Camps L3/L6/357, PoW No.83 with Sgt A.E.Smith, PoW No.443.

and this from elsewhere on the web:

I am currently researching the life of my great uncle. His name was Warrant officer Edward Callander D.F.M. He was shot down over Laon 6/5/42 on a bombing raid to Stuttgart. He was eventually shot on 7/3/44 by the Gestapo for escaping from Hydekrug 5/3/44. I hope you can help me with any information on his POW Life. Any info no matter how little would be fantastic. I am also informed he tried to escape twice. I have seen the account of his second escape in the original book "Escape From Germany" by Aiden Crawley. Regards John Brenan

His gazette entry for the DFM was on 2 Sep 1941 (not 1942 as reported on the lost bombers site). There is no citation.

I've just realised I hadn't posted this before but this memorial commemorates a man lost in the Vietnam war.

L/Cpl Thomas Ross was lost in 1965 serving with 1st Bn Royal Australian Regiment.

According to this website

http://www.vvaa.org.au/terendak.htm

he is buried in Terendak Garrison Cemetery, Malacca, Malaysia

212612, Lance Corporal Thomas Ross, age 25, Died 12 Oct 1965

He's on Panel 4 of the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. This is from the AWM Online Roll of Honour

Thomas Ross
Rank: Lance Corporal [L Cpl]
Service Number: 212612
Unit: 1 RAR (RA INF)

These two units caught my eye. In both cases there is nothing in the CWGC data to link them to Dumfries. The first man died in the defence of Hong Kong, the second as a PoW in Thailand

MACKIE, WILLIAM CRAIGIE KEITH
Rank: Serjeant (Pipe-Major)
Regiment/Service: 2 Coy. Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps
Secondary Regiment: formerly of King's Own Scottish Borderers
Age: 59
Date of Death: 24/12/1941
Additional information: Husband of Amelia Mackie, of Manly, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Column 33.
Memorial: SAI WAN MEMORIAL, Hong Kong

McGUFFOG, ROBERT NICHOLAS
Rank: Company Quartermaster Serjeant
Regiment/Service: Kedah Volunteer Force
Age: 37
Date of Death: 13/12/1943
Service No: 820
Additional information: Son of William McGuffog and of Helen McGuffog (nee Millar); husband of Elizabeth Beattie McGuffog, of Slateford, Edinburgh.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: B6. X. 19.
Cemetery: THANBYUZAYAT WAR CEMETERY, Thailand

This name also merited a check

RAGGENBASS, JOHN
Rank: Sergeant (W.Op./Air Gnr.)
Regiment/Service: Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
Date of Death: 30/11/1940
Service No: 971156
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Sec. X. Grave 13300.
Cemetery: STOCKPORT (WILLOW GROVE) CEMETERY

And it's not common to see an Air Training Corps name.

McALLISTER, NEIL
Rank: Cadet
Regiment/Service: Air Training Corps
Unit Text: 283 Sqdn.
Age: 17
Date of Death: 29/07/1942
Additional information: Son of George and Joan McAllister, of Dumfries.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 288.
Memorial: RUNNYMEDE MEMORIAL

Or East African Forces (on the memorial)

BROWN, SAMUEL JOHN
Rank: Captain
Regiment/Service: Pioneer Corps
Date of Death: 15/10/1942
Service No: 83232
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Old Sec. 2. Grave 80.
Cemetery: Moshi Cemetery, Tanzania

Suprisingly for such a large number of Second World War names (158) there are no women listed.

Serjeant Piper/Pipe Major 11537, William Graigie Keith MacKie, 2nd King's Own Scottish Borderers was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in the Peace Gazette of June 1919.

SUPPLEMENT TO THE LONDON GAZETTE, 3 JUNE, 1919
War Office, 3rd June, 1919.
His Majesty the KING has been graciously pleased to approve of the award of the Meritorious Service Medal to the following Warrant Officers, Non-commissioned Officers and Men, in recognition of valuable; service rendered with the Armies in France and Flanders.

11537 Sjt.-Piper Mackie, W. C. K., 2nd Bn. (Edinburgh)

Don't know of any Dumfries connection.

For Robert McGuffog, the SNWM has him as Staff Sergeant and born Kirkcudbrightshire.

Stuart

Thanks for the extra information. Neither the war memorial or CWGC acknowledge Mackie's MSM.

McGuffog is listed as Staff Sergeant on the memorial too.

There was a Robert McGuffog born c1906 at Kirkcudbright and there was a William (father) age 34 at Kirkcudbright on 1901 census.
Can't provide details, my financial director (she who must....) says I've run out of budget for this month!

Citation for Military Cross, London Gazette 23 April 1918
2nd/Lt. David Burns Dempster, K.O.S.B.,
Spec. Res.
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to
duty in reorganising his own company and
the company on his right when all the officers
were out of action.

Oddly this MC is not listed on the memorial although other awards are.
