ARBROATH HERALD FRIDAY 28th October 2011: Page 14 : Letter to the editor:
WHERE IS THE TABLET?
Sir, As we approach the anniversary of The Armistice and we remember the war dead on Remembrance Sunday I would like to raise a question with your knowledgeable readers to see what happened to the beautiful brass mural tablet that was erected in the vestibule of the INVERBROTHOCK PARISH CHURCH in Arbroath and unveiled by Lady GW Baxter of Invereighty, Forfar on March 27th , 1921.
This memorial tablet listed the 48 men who had been connected with the congregation and who fell in the Great War . The Arbroath herald of April 1, 1921 , lists the names of all the 48 men who were casualties of that war and J F Webster is one of these named.
It would appear that the congregation of Inverbrothock church in James Street in the town dissolved in 1977 and the building was sold around 1990 to the Baptist Church and then latterly a New Life Church and it seems now a commercial premises.
I made enquires at the former church and was informed that there were no war memorials inside the building so where has the beautiful brass mural tablet that was located in the vestibule of the church gone to?? Was it moved to some other church within Arbroath ??
If it was not kept it will be yet another church in Arbroath that allowed its War Memorial to be deposited in this way.
Yours etc
Patrick W Anderson
