Location - in Kirkmabreck Parish church, Creetown at OS Map Ref NX 476 585

To
The loved memory of
Major Joseph Johnstone Muir,
Madras Staff Corps,
Eldest son of the Rev. John Muir, Minister of Kirkmabreck,
Born 18th July 1833
He entered the madras army in 1850: served in the second Burmese war in 1852:
was present with the Martaban column during the advance to Tonghoo
under the command of General Steel, KCB (medal for Pegu)
he also served with the Madras Rifles against the mutineers in Bengal:
was present at the defence of Azimghur agains Kooer Singh's force
in March 1858, & joined in the pursuit of that chieftain with the force under
Brigadier Douglas in April of the same year? present at the actions
of Azimghur & Ghoossee, & at the attack on the rebels
in the Jugdespore Jungles on the 4th June 1858, [medal.] He was for some time
Adjutant of his corps, after the breaking up of his own regiment 49th NI
he died at Bangalore, Madras Pressidency on the 28th Dec 1871
and was buried in the new cemetery there.
A thorough soldier & a true man, he was beloved & esteemed by
brother officers & by sepoys alike, & his death sincerely mourned by all.
This tablet is erected by his widow.
