Ferniegair is a small hamlet which is located 1 mile (1½ km) south of Hamilton and 2 miles (3 km) north west of Larkhall in South Lanarkshire Council Area. Nearby sits Chatelherault Country Park and Hunting Lodge and also Cadzow Castle.

David just thought I would add a pic, its not much better than yours but is slightly brighter so you can see the sculpture a little better. When I was photographing this memorial a local told me that it was essentially kit built. The local miners who formed the memorial committee simply ordered the monumental masons to deliver the monument in its various parts and then they built it themeselves.

The memorial is a square section, tapering, tall plinth made of layers of semi dressed stone blocks with four polished grey granite panels inserted into the plinth. The main face with the dedication inscription is to the Main Road. Above the plinth is a stone figure of a soldier holding a bayoneted rifle with the muzzle and bayonet held facing forward. He wears a beret and puttees and carries pack and gasmask case. The memorial is on a small slabbed area surrounded by dense shrubs/bushes on three sides immediately beside Ferniegair Community Hall. There are a couple of small steps to the memorial from the adjacent pavement. Approximate height of plinth is 3m and figure 2m. The base is 1 to 2m square.

"Mrs Farrell, 5 Single Row, Ferniegair, has been informed by the War Office that Private M. Farrell (7327), 2nd Scottish Rifles, was killed in action on March 10 at Neuve Chapelle. He was formerly attached to the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, and served nine years in India. He was 35 years of age, ans leaves a widow and four children."

"It is announced that Private James M. Smith, 6th Dragoon Guards, and late of Old Row, Ferniegair, Hamilton, died in a hospital train in France from heart disease."

(Glasgow Herald 29th April 1915)
"Mrs Smith, Old Row, Ferniegair, Hamilton, has lost her husband and a son within a short time of each other. Private James M. Smith, the father, died in a hospital train in France on March 18. He was in the 6th Dragoon Guards (Carabineers), and had come through the South African War. He was a National Reservist, and rejoined his old regiment. He was 40 years of age and left a widow and eight of a family, two sons being in the Territorials. One has since been killed in the recent fighting in France and the other is still in Scotland. The dead son was Private Charles Smith, 6th Scottish Rifles, who was killed on April 22, having been shot through the head. He was 19 year of age, and he and his father were employed at Ferniegair Colliery previous to the war."
