Whilst in the library recently I spotted a letter submitted by "onlooker" which was a scathing response to a previous article about the unveiling of the Madderty Parish War Memorial in the Church. He stated that this was not the parish memorial but the ministers 'personal project' and that an outdoor memorial would be erected as THE parish memorial. This would be completed after due process and consultation with members of the public/committees etc.

Despite Madderty also having an outdoor memorial, this, according to the newspaper article, was also regarded as a parish memorial. Therefore, the earliest civic (WW1) memorial erected in Perthshire. Not Scotland though, because Ardler, as far as I know, has that honour.

PERTHSHIRE ADVERTISER: 13.08.1919

MADDERTY WAR MEMORIAL

UNVEILED BY VERY REV. PROF. PATERSON

Possibly the first war memorial to have reached completion in Scotland was unveiled in Madderty on Thursday. The memorial which is placed in the Parish Church takes the form of a stained glass window of fine workmanship and conception representing a knight of the Round table with an angel hovering in the background. It is the work of the distinguished Glasgow artist, Oscar Paterson.
