This memorial is located within St. Ninian's Cathedral, Perth - the first to be built in Britain since the Reformation. The memorial takes the form of a massive stained glass window with a long brass plaque beneath containing the names of the dead;

Again apologies for the photos. As has been said before the church pics are extremely difficult for a variety of reasons but I almost had to give up with this brass plaque.

I may have to go back to transcribe the words on the window. Even 'zooming in' with the camera was poor due to the window's size.

I was glad to find this one as it had always seemed strange (because I didn't know) that the Black Watch Boer War Memorial was in Edinburgh (even with Wauchope's connection) and nothing in Perthshire. However this lays that to rest. I just wonder how many in the Big County know of its existence?

I suppose the names are the same as the monument on 'The Mound'.

I expect the names will be the same. However, the statue on the Mound splits them into those who died in action and those who died from disease.

The names appear to be the same, however there are a few discrepancies.

1. James Bruce and James Mudie appear on both plates in Edinburgh.

2. Robert Muir in Perth appears to be Robert Moore in Edinburgh.

3. Privates J Duncan, Thomas Duncan, Edward Smith and Alexander Thomson appear in Edinburgh only.

4. Samuel Adamson in Perth but Samuel Allison in Edinburgh.

5. James Walton in Perth but William in Edinburgh.

6. Privates John Browning, Charles Davidson, Richard Halkett and John McDonald in Perth are Lance Corporals in Edinburgh.

7. James Pattison in Perth but Patterson in Edinburgh.

Or is it the Vodka?

There were TWO Private James Mudie's who died during the Boer War

Pte 7238 James Wyllie Neish Mudie (my Great Uncle) died after being shot in the spine during an attack in Pretoria in June 1900

Pte 4919 James Mudie died of Enteric Fever in April 1902

That is why there are names are on both panels

Jame's brother John Knight Mudie moved to Australia and was killed on the first day of the Galipolli landings as part of the 9th Bn, Australian Infantry. My Grandfather, Walter Nicoll Mudie, was injured in Palestine during the 3rd Battle of Gaza whilst serving with the Black Watch

PK

Many thanks for clearing up the matter over the two Black Watch men with the name James Mudie.

I see from the website below that John Knight Mudie had a Scottish connection. He was born in Dundee in 1889 and joined the Australian Army soon after war was declared in August 1914.

http://lrd.co.nz/history/202.html

MUDIE, JOHN
Initials: J
Nationality: Australian
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Australian Infantry, A.I.F.
Unit Text: 9th Bn.
Date of Death: 25/04/1915
Service No: 947
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: 31.
Memorial: LONE PINE MEMORIAL

And a Private John Mudie AIF is listed on the St. Mary Magdalene/HolyTrinity War Memorial, Dundee: http://www.fdca.org.uk/WarMemorialsMe-My.pdf

Thanks

Adam
